Quite interesting when it comes to cultural differences between groups. As you say cricket is almost certainly a factor, like a religion in itself in South Asia.
I remember chatting to an Indian mate of mine about the lack of Indian players in football, this was when Chopra was with Town and my mate said he had adopted Ipswich as his team. He was a big cricket follower and only moderately into football, he also said culturally there's perhaps more of a push to academia in Indian families here and its hard to be both a doctor and a footballer.
