Feeling he's best position is that of a 2nd striker.

It's been a discussion before about Sammy S in that he kinda falls into that bracket too. So with Chaplin now gone have we still potentially got that link up issue up the pitch if akpom is of a similar nature to Sammy S and more of a scorer than a play maker.

Open question to all as he may be a hell of a play making forward too.

a niche perspective

If he were to play there, off Hirst or Azon, it would make their job easier, as one of the Centre Backs would have to cover him from our goal kicks.

....playmaker/link up role can be taken on by the midfield rather than just having two "destroyers" in there.

I can see that role being taken on by Nunez when it's possible, leaving more of a "two" upfront.

Obviously the state of the game and opponents will dictate it, but having a real "number 8" in the squad has got to help attacking creativity.

A lot of our best transition stuff goes down the flanks*, has been doing so since L1. What we need is not so much central linkage, as players to opportunistically take advantage of the chaos after crosses have come in and perhaps first shots been blocked. That was Chaplin's great talent.

I don't think it matters if Szmodics and Akpom think of themselves as 2nd Strikers or No. 10s - their task is the same, to pick up the loose ball and put it in the net.

* Or diagonally from deep centre midfield out wide.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

His good spell at ‘Boro had him in the inside forward role, which is where Sammy played whenever I saw him do well at Blackburn. So neither were in a sole number 10 role behind the striker. I think Boro played with 2 number 10s and Sammie notionally played on the right but stayed quite central.

We don’t have that role either with us using wingers both sides. From the little I’ve seen they both need space to run into to. I don’t think either are suited to where teams sit in a block against us, which presumably will happen a lot this season.

I’m not a fan of thinking formations are the be all and end all. However, with these two (and considering how ineffective Philogene and JC have been), I think they’d do a lot better in a 5221 using 2 number 10s as support strikers. That would allow Leif and Johnson to concentrate on their better attacking strengths too. There’s no place for Nunez in that though. Or Clarke or Philogene.

Oh well, that’s KM’s problem!

Possibly but I saw more in Chaplins game than that. He started a lot of that link up play.. always remembering his telepathic relationship with wes

We kinda saw it this season when he and ogebene came on as subs chappers was finding him out on the wing then taking up that 2dn striker position in and around the box.

But as others had said perhaps having more creativity from the cms will work better

Tho a lot of that was Chaplin dropping very deep, sometimes nearly to a Full-Back position. Hopefully the CMs can do more of that this time instead, so the attackers can be loading in and around the box for more (and better) shots.

Really enjoyed his interview.

Sounded driven, focused and made it clear he was willing to take on the challenge and didn't shy away from needing wins fast. Enjoyed his cameos so far, hope he gets the start.

Really hoping he starts at 10.

Seems wrong to be hoping Szmodics isn't fit, but I think Akpom is the missing piece of the puzzle.
