Delightful score, but tighter game 09:44 - Sep 13 with 1416 viewsRIPbobby

I'm not sure what to think about Sheffield United? First of all it was nice to not see the low block. The first 60 seconds summed up the match as a whole. We got into 2 strong positions and they got into 1. Superb. United actually played fairly well first 20 minutes and yet we still had 4 shots on target in that time. For the rest of the half they continued to stretch us without pulling the trigger and yet we still had additional shots on goal.

2nd half was a bit more one sided in the scoreline, but United still came at us again and again. This gave us big opportunity to move the ball across the zones and have the freedom of pitch. Poor Mr Godfrey does not like tackling at Portman Road does he. Many more shots on target for us and 4 more goals. Lovely.

But you look at the match stats. They completed a lot more passes than us and had loads of touches in our box. Really bizzare. There is definitely a team in there, but something just isn't quite right for them.

So all in all a great night for us, with some lovely performances out there. Hopefully we take take that confidence to Ewood Park next week. But please no low block boredom.

Was a very interesting first half, as they came an overran us in midfield and stopped us advancing through the middle third really effectively. We struggled to build any of the possession or control you'd expect from KM's team. We looked the more dangerous, but not in the usual style - focusing on our shape without the ball.

We looked like the away team at times - quite happy to sit in low and defend the cross with a lot of bodies behind the ball, limiting them to very little but at the expense of control of the play. We allowed them to recycle far too often for my liking at 1-0, because you know you're an unlucky bounce / deflection away from the momentum swinging.

The second goal puts that all to bed and we just progressed through the gears from there with some excellent performances.

Sadly for the Blades fans they have the ability to be dominant in the middle of the park but were dismal at both ends of it. I can't see Selles lasting beyond Monday lunchtime.

So. Teams that come to PR and have a go at us are very likely to get walloped. Why would anyone come and not play a low block. We have to be good enough to break those teams down. Once we go 2-0 up then the games eon.

Yep 2nd goal very important... score that against Derby and the result would have been similar

A strange game imo. Sheff Utd flattered to deceive. They were actually pretty good in large parts and for that first half were largely controlling the game. Between the boxes they look a well-drilled team and moved the ball nicely.

But… what a shocking front line-up. They were terrible where it mattered around our box. That was the biggest difference imo. Brooks got himself into some excellent positions but had zero end product (he was shocking, but not alone). Billy Jean gets a couple of sniffs and we’re 2 up. At the other end defensively they were poor two.

If the game was played between the boxes and judges like a boxing match we’d have lost by unanimous decision. Luckily it isn’t, we had top quality up front and then once the game was won you could see us growing in confidence. That was massive for us, even if we’ll have much tougher matches against most other teams.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Yes, we have shown we can blow away teams who come to take us on, now we need to show we can break down teams who come to low block and if we can show that we are on to something.

I think they were pretty good in the first 10 minutes, or at least they looked that way. Maybe we're an attacking team by nature, and our reticence to go blood and thunder from the off means that we look like sitting ducks at the beginning of games. Not sure. They were either pretty good or we made them look good in that opening spell.

But after that I thought they were pretty poor. They were certainly able to be carved open, in no small part down to Godfrey. I think they will really struggle this season. I doubt we'll see many more generous defensive displays, or maybe just naive.

As has been said elsewhere, you're far more likely to get something at Portman Road playing the low block and spoiling tactics. When Philogene has a lesser night, he's criticised for being lightweight. It's no surprise that when he's had a barnstorming night, it coincides with a team which seems less inclined to try to impose themselves physically than many others.

I think defending like that, Sheffield United will be beaten home, away and everywhere else.

Really great result for us, encouraging performances in many parts of the pitch, and just what we needed right now. Also, when clinical finishing had been the biggest of our numerous problems, it was nice to put that to bed well and truly.

We shouldn't get too carried away in victory, as we shouldn't in defeat. I can't see us facing a more favourable approach from an opposing team so shot of confidence this season, and certainly not in the next 2 months. But, I feel that we are right back in the game. Onwards and upwards. Gelling. All that.

I was wanting to comment similar of Friday night but was clearly the outlier at that point with the emotion the game brings. So I avoided commenting to avoid being labelled a miserable fu*%^r!

I think the result is massive, will give a confidence boost, which will further the togetherness and belief of the group. This in turn will help improve the performances so we can then dominate games.

However, teams low blocking like derby will be the norm I fear, at Portman rd. at least, learning to unlock them is the key. Someone commented Nunes previously for this and think they might be right.

That's exactly how I saw it. I said to my mate we look like the away team.

That said great result and hopefully a confidence and momentum builder, need to back it up with a win at Blackburn now.

I thought they worked super hard in the first half and maybe just couldn’t sustain it - O’Hare might be a bit annoying but he really pressed hard, as did the rest of the front line. I just think they were never going to be able to keep that up for 90, or indeed 60 as it turned out.

My impression was that those that came on when he changed four just didn’t have that energy, although that might have been game state related.

It could have turned out differently without the difference in quality of finishing we showed, and if it had done Selles would likely be held up as a tactical genius!
