Let’s get this season started… 18:57 - Sep 13 with 1987 viewsitfcsuth

Been critical of Philogene’s levels more than enough during his time here, so only fair and more than happy to say the individual performance from him was absolutely mind blowing - best hat trick I’ve seen in terms of quality of goals - consistency is key for him now, especially this level.

Big shout out to Furlong and Matusiwa, do their jobs to an absolute tee, and it isn’t always the prettiest stuff, but some of the most important.

Was good to see Leif flying at top level, flying and bombing forward, on the overlap and underlap, and less inverting into midfield, that’s playing to his strengths.

Only real question marks were Hirst and Akpom, I’m not sure Akpom is a number 10, looks more like a 9, not sure he possesses that delicate creative touch in the 10 role, we’ll see.

As noted yesterday, an exceptional result, individual excellence with ruthless finishing, but I still think there is work to do, and many more levels to reach for us, which is frightening.

COYFB!

Agree, would like to see what Akpom can do up front and dare I say put Nunez in the 10?

Philogenes performance was great. However he won't have an easier time against a fullback than godfrey who was absolutely woeful.

Hopefully however it's given him the confidence to take on who ever he comes up against.

The puzzle of how to get Nunez into the side is a difficult one. It may ultimately be that he is the best option in the 10, but my view is that that is not necessarily the best use of him. Head up, long diagonal balls, that sort of thing seems to be an important part of his game, and that won't happen in the 10. His range of passing is one of his biggest strengths, and I think that calls for a CM berth alongside a Matusiwa type figure.

But hey, nice problem to have.

Great to have /both/ maligned wingers on the scoresheet in the game in which we came to life. They won't always be consistent, but once we get 1-0 up and some space opens up, I think they can both be devastating on their day.

I genuinely don't know who are our best 9 and 10 combo though. I guess time will tell.

If you can manage them well there's no reason why he and cajuste couldn't simply rotate. Cajuste knows we manage his knee so he won't begrudge not starting every game. And as long as you're swapping them after 60 they'll both get plenty of regular starts and being fresh too. Esp when nunez has also had his own fair share of injuries ( altho not as much it seems that nodge fans seem to make out)

You say that but he will come up against several worse full back/RCB combos than Godfrey/Tanganga this season. Impossibly hard to play against when he is confident and in that sort of mood. Can tie you in knots both ways and finish off both feet. When you watch the goals back, not sure what you can expect Godfrey to do about goals 2 and 3. It is just pure class from Philogene.

I agree with that overall but I will make a couple of points.

Leif cuased loads of my problems with his runs from deep, and no SU player tracked him back, which added to Godfrey's problems.

Philogene's first two goals came from his right foot. Defenders are always told to force the player onto their weaker foot, which Godfrey did for Philogene's third goal. He stayed on Philogene's right, who then suddenly switched left and smashed an even harder shot with his weaker left foot.
Yes Godfrey was poor, but especially for the third I dont care who was RB, on the night Philogene was unstoppable, and no RB can defender against a player with two great feet in that situation, you need help.

It was as much about Philogene's ability as Godfrey poor performance.

Was very encouraged by the Nunez debut.

We are going to play a lot of low blocks and his range of passing and ability to switch play will be really useful. Saw some really good stuff from him in his cameo.

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?
