The slope is getting more slippery by the day. Kimmel didn’t even make fun of Kirk (as is being reported), he made fun of Trump’s reaction to being asked about how he felt after the death of one of his supposed friends, and immediately started talking about how he’s building a big beautiful ballroom at the White House.

Can’t criticize the King in the land of the free.

Evidently the 1st ammendment is not as important as the FCC approving media companys' acquisitions!

The administration tentacles continue to wrestle control away from democratic principles.

I think I saw in another recent thread a discussion around what the correct nomenclature for such actions are...

9 months into this term...something has to break at some point Shirley?

it's an example of the 'chilling effect' of attacks on free speech. in the end it means that censors don't need to act, instead their targets, in this case abc, self-censor out of fear of the consequences.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

It seems a very obvious, anti-democratic power grab taking place in plain sight. And yet the response in America appears to be very muted (when viewed from this side of the pond).

Just posting this for context.

BBC News - Jimmy Kimmel taken off air over Charlie Kirk comments
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c203n52x1y9o

Kimmel has done nothing other than his job to provide a wry commentary on current events.
This is no different than the fair served up on HIGNFY. It's satirical and nothing else.
And rather than enjoying all the lavish trappings currently provided by his host, the man baby with the bone china ego chose to post about it. CAPITALS included of course.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

As I mentioned on another thread it is ironic that the death of someone who advocated free speech is being met by an attack on free speech.

It's cancel culture pure and simple.

The US system has very limited avenues to do anything about it. If one faction has control of all branches of the government and the Supreme Court, however marginal or contrived, all checks and balances are out of the window. The Founding Father do not seem to have thought of this - as Enlightenment thinkers educated in the Classics, they ought to have known better (just look at the fall of the Roman Republic).

A vote of no confidence in the President does not exist as a mechanism, or has no practical effect, even if it could be got through a partisan Congress. Illness or criminal activity are the only ways of removing the incumbent - and the judges of that are his own supporters in the House.

Street protests have no practical effect and, in any case, the effectively binary political setup ensures that pretty much half the population will support whoever is in power. This doubly so with someone who does not care what those not backing him think (indeed revels in their discomfiture) and takes an imaginary view of the balance of public opinion.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Interesting part of this article-

"The chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, thanked Nexstar "for doing the right thing" and said he hoped other broadcasters would follow its lead. Nexstar is currently seeking FCC approval for its planned $6.2bn (£4.5bn) merger with Tegna.

FCC head Carr, a Trump appointee, had earlier criticised Kimmel's monologue.

The head of the US communications regulator said on Wednesday that the ABC host had shown "the sickest conduct possible" and he urged Disney to take action.

"[Broadcasters] have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest," the Trump appointee told the Benny Show, a conservative podcast."

Looked into the Nexstar-Techna merger and it needs FCC approval because of anti monopoly legislation. Looks like Nexstar saw a chance to further their business interests here.

Funny how they object to what they see as censorship on the internet but not on TV.

Ultimately, it seems to boil down to trying to ensure a country in which only free speech they approve of is allowed free rein.

As I said on a post yesterday, "It's free speech, Jim, but not as we know it."

Exactly. The 'vote of no confidence', i.e. impeachment, is a farce and is always likely to go along party lines. What the Senate should have done when it had the chance was to convict, but it was never going to happen. McConnell has since voiced some opposition to what has been happening... but let's face it Mitch, you blew your chance to do anything about it when you should have.

Yet on other very recent threads you advise that democracy in the USA is fully functioning or words to that effect
And in the past you put forward equivalence between the threat to free speech from the Republicans and the Democrats in the USA
Incredible
