Sunderland starting well in the PL on 09:13 - Sep 22 with 780 views | Smoresy | I think their average starting XI features nine new recruits; impressive how quickly they've knitted together. As Sitters says, they recruited a high calibre of player, many from the elite clubs around Europe, for the sum of approx. £160m. From the old guard they've continued to involve Hume, Isidor, Mayenda, Rigg, and Ballard. Of those players, I'd be inclined to only describe Hume and Ballard as EFL stalwarts.

Sunderland starting well in the PL on 22:36 - Sep 21 by pointofblue | It wasn't the Liverpool and Manchester City away games which knocked us to start with. It was the abysmal performances against West Ham and Everton, followed by throwing away a two goal lead at Brentford. |
Yes, obviously those games were not good enough. But we gave everything against Liverpool and lost. We got decimated by City. We had zero confidence going into those games. If we were playing West Ham at home first game, we would've won with our performance. The sequencing of games has a massive effect. I'm not dismissing their recruitment or whatever, but to pretend the fixture list doesn't have an effect is wrong imo.

Indeed. Shouldn't really need saying that it's easier to get a good start and build some confidence and momentum if you're opening two fixtures are West Ham and Burnley rather than Liverpool and Man City. I think people have also forgotten how hampered we were by injuries last season, not sure what Sunderland's injury list is like currently but we went into the season without Broadhead, Hirst, and Clarke, all of whom had been important players for us in our promotion season. It only got worse from there too. Sunderland have recruited well and they may stay up, though it's still far too early to tell. I think in general all three promoted sides have a chance not necessarily because of what they've done but because Brentford and Wolves look far weaker this season, West Ham look a mess, and some of the stronger sides from last season also look a bit more vulnerable. To stay up, we'd have needed to finish above Spurs last year. I can't see that being the case this year, those a few teams outside the newly promoted clubs who look in danger and post-Christmas that wasn't the case last year.

Sunderland starting well in the PL on 19:45 - Sep 21 by BlueBoots | Just spent on transfers (doesn't factor income from transfers) |
the wages are higher too, but it's probably what you have to do now. if we go up again, we'll be building on better foundations to make it work.

Sunderland starting well in the PL on 17:35 - Sep 21 by Nthsuffolkblue | Equally Wolves are giving getting relegated a better go than last season (and they gave it a pretty good go until Christmas last time). |
it's still very early, wolves & west ham only had one extra point at this time last year, everton and palace also didn't have a win yet

Sunderland starting well in the PL on 22:00 - Sep 21 by JammyDodgerrr | Can't believe nobody so far in this thread has mentioned how kind their fixtures have been. Worst West Ham team in years, fellow promoted team, worst Brentford team in years, depleted palace, and worst Villa team in years. We played Liverpool and Man City back to back FFS. |
Take a look at my post Jammy.
