Horner leaves Red Bull with £52m pay-off on 15:26 - Sep 22 with 1107 views | bsw72 | I didn't realise until today that the F1 spend cap of ~$140M per year, which I thought applied to all staff, but not drivers, does not actually apply to a teams "Top 3" personnel either. Until then I was thinking that losing that $70M is going to cause some problems for Red Bull . . .

I dont understand F1 really. How do teams make money? I guess its from the advertising sponsorship? and winning races?

Predominantly through sponsorship and prize money from F1 itself. From memory HP’s title sponsorship with Ferrari was worth about £60-70m per year. Teams roughly earn between £50-£100m per year based on final standings.

Majority from sponsors, a large amount depending where the team finish in the constructors championship - they get a bigger cut from F1 Themselves, who make their money from TV revenue, attendances at races etc Then merch sales There are also some drivers who are well financed themselves and basically bring in cash and known as cash drivers, which lower level teams seem to take on as it helps build the car, stroll for example isn't the best driver but his dad ploughs in loadsa money for aston martin.

There's not really any pay drivers in F1 anymore. Stroll was an example of one, but his dad actually bought the Aston Martin team and now seems to want to buy success for the whole team, rather than just finance his son's seat. Perez was kind of one as he brought a lot of sponsorship with him but he has no seat this year. He will return with Cadillac next year, though.

How does that compare to off-setting losses against tax as the owner of a football club? Big money in that I hear.
