I knew him first as an athlete when growing up. A thoroughly decent guy who epitomised fairness, & always had full respect for others including adversaries. It's because in Scotland his surname is pronounced mingis.
It's to do with the z and, for anyone interested, here's an article about it which also mentions Dalziel.
