Ryder Cup 2025 thread 12:04 - Sep 26 with 1892 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

For those of us who will be watching this weekend, I thought a thread for it makes sense.

Who’d we reckon? I’ve had a lumpy bet on the Americans at 1.74 on the machine. For four reasons:
- Scottie Scheff. His singles point is almost automatic and he’s going to be lethal in the four balls as well.
- Depth. The yanks have every player ranked 23 or above in the rankings. Whereas Europe have 5 players ranked below that.
- Class. The Americans have 7 of the world’s top 10.
- Home advantage. That’s the main one for me. Only 2 away European victories in 45 years. I see no reason as to why that changes here. The course will be set up to suit the Americans.

Thought 1.74 was a proper price and have backed accordingly.

Poll: Would you take a draw tonight if offered right now?

Mudball. You turn it down so you don't hear the US fans? They're quiet now, you can turn it back up.

The guy qualified as one of the top 6. To say he's "not very good" is a bit silly :P

The marshall and crowd interventions to keep the American mishits from being in a worse position is a touch annoying.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

The joy of matchplay is you can have a couple of shocking holes, but actually get away with it if your opponent lets you, and worse case is you can only lose 1 hole each time . . . it's such a different mindset to how these guys play golf 90% of the time.

It's an ugly golf course, isn't it? Those excessively complex bunkers and flat straight lines everywhere.

Lovely course, but long & very difficult. These players are so good. Huge complex, very worthy of the Ryder Cup.

....at all, not the way they have set it up anyway.

They've cut all the rough down so that it's not a punishment in any way and the greens are so soft that the ball is basically sticking where it lands.

The fairway bunkers aren't coming into play either because the players are hitting it so long.

It's basically target golf down the driving range.

Justin Rose. Legend!

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

You didn't see Robert MacIntyre on the 18th earlier? The pro players are so fantastic, they thoroughly destroy every course. This place would break most club golfers. You don't see the huge slopes on TV, or the hugely raised greens, or the sheer length of it. There's some incredible Golf going on!

They're amazing sportsmen. How many elite athletes are up at 4am on the day of a game?

Bethpage Black normally has far more bite, but it has been deliberately softened for this Ryder Cup to favour the USA team. The rough has been cut shorter, so missing fairways isn’t nearly as punishing as it would be in a major set-up.

This isn’t a new tactic — the Americans have often tailored Ryder Cup courses this way, relying on their collective distance advantage from the tee. But that edge has faded, and with today’s parity in driving distance, shorter rough doesn’t give them the same benefit it once did.

Bethpage is a course designed to reward accuracy, yet this set-up (helped along by the rain) has made it play far easier than it would under normal major championship conditions.
