Difficult to know where we are at from pompey game 08:19 - Sep 28 with 944 viewsmuccletonjoe

Yes , there were periods in the first half yesterday when we looked to be dominant, and it lead to philogene's goal, but there followed a quieter spell before Hirst got the second. After half time , i don't know if we were managing the game , or losing concentration or performance levels dropped , but there were alot of wayward passes, sloppy mistakes and mis-timed runs which would not have gone unpunished by better teams. On the whole , yes we are still improving , but all over the pitch the improvement varies. Next two games will not be so forgiving. Players and manager will know that i am sure. We need to learn some important lessons from our first few games, and learn them fast.

It's probably best to describe it as getting better each game in certain elements of the football required in a km team.

Some of the football yesterday was brilliant. Some things didn't come off but there were lots to be positive about.

As KM said we still aren't at the required fitness levels KM wants from the squad once we are then its going to look another level. For now what we get from the game is partnerships are clearly starting to flourish and there's more to come.

a niche perspective

I have to agree. Sometimes we looked almost McKennaball like in the first half. There was a drop off mid first half when Portsmouth appeared to get more into the game.

Second half we were either holding off and doing enough or Portsmouth made changes and had a lot more of the ball. We did look sloppier 2nd half. Also thought once again subs were waiting a bit to long before coming on, especially with the mid week game on Tuesday night.

I think the switch off into additional time was the cause to allow them to score, and we should have seen the game out without conceding. But 3 points are what's important, and performances will improve.

More than happy with the 3 points

I thought we played pretty well on balance. We’ve not going to dominate sides for 90 minutes and win 3 or 4 nil every week, people need to realise that. I see our current position as similar to our L1 promotion season, objectively speaking we’ve got better quality and depth than most and there will be days that really shows, but we’ll have to scrap for it and there will be some frustrating games.

We made Pompey look pretty poor but shouldn’t forget their 3 away games prior to yesterday were a win at Oxford and draws at West Brom & Southampton, they’re no mugs. It’s a good win, +3 points and first back to back league wins in over a year.

1st half was very good I thought, good value for the 2 goal lead and could’ve been more. 2nd a bit sloppy, a bit loose in possession and seemed like we lacked a bit of focus and killer instinct which is something I think McKenna will want to see improving. Derby was similar in that respect, although yesterday marked an improvement. We’re going in the right direction though.

Should have added , we had 2 very good chances for 3 - 0 second half, even though we didn't dominate possession.

I think this is a good summary Clive.

I saw the Saints/Pompey game and Portsmouth had the best of it with their pressing game. They’re well organised, decent and will finish well up the table in my view.

With the quality of players we have, we should be putting these teams away. Stay with it and as we get into the season I think we will. Do I wish and did I think we’d start the season better than we have? Of course. But it’s human beings not FM25 and things don’t always work out as one hopes. Six games into a 46 game season? Early days and there’s the genesis of a very exciting team there.

Where I disagreed with Mick Mills after the game was that he felt the team should be better than it is at this point in time with more partnerships formed after pre-season and two months of the season (paraphrase). It’s actually only six league games and a number of players are relatively new with little or no pre season with us.

Mick was also quick to forget how long it took his team to adjust to Muhren then Thijssen in the late 70s. Muhren arrived I think autumn 78 wasn’t until the second half of 79/80 that they started to truly devastate teams. A poor comparison, but it does demonstrate that what you plan for sometimes takes time.

More positives than negatives.

Literally a game of two halves. At times in the first half it was very much the old us. Second half list that fluidity and became a tad disjointed.

Feels like we haven’t fully clicked as yet, but still have the quality to win. I would like to see more from our our no 10s doesn’t feel like they are getting on the ball and creating

You never underestimate any team but for me the game was won in the first half, the game was managed to a degree but conceding with the last kick of the game was a concentration issue, we were under minimal pressure.

Don't think many (if any) Portsmouth fans will go away from that game thinking they were unlucky and the better side.

Bringing on Nunez, Clarke, Azon, McAteer and Akpom (keep forgetting about this guy) was almost a bit of flex.

I think later in the game the substitutions really affected our flow, however I also think we thought the game was won and were conserving energy for the next two matches, however we didn't manage it anywhere near as well as we could even though we only conceded very late.

I think the main takeaway I had from the game was that I saw far more "McKenna" style attacking play. We are starting to look much better in transition and moving the ball forward, the left side looked superb in the first half and Matusiwa and Cajuste were both excellent.

I think it gave me confidence it'll come. It's conceivable we will be within the playoffs by Monday if things go our way and there is plenty of time in the season. We've still only lost one match.

Our passing looked much crisper and more accurate than it has done previously this season.

Who do you class as our number 10s ? If it’s Sammy and Akpom, then lm not sure it will improve. It’s not their fault,it’s not the way they play. Square pegs in round holes.

I think that's partially true with regards to Sammy, it's not his thing to provide link-up play. I think Akpom can do that and that it's a bit early to judge him given we have an extremely limited dataset.

I think later in the season we might even see Walle Egeli have a shot there in some matches. He certainly looks like he can pick a pass and isn't afraid to shoot.
