He was a passenger last night. He needs to be played a lot further up, like Boro did. He was dropping back to help the defence.
Greaves looked like he and the rest of the team have never met before. I'd prefer Kipre and O'Shea on Sunday. McAteer is weak on the right, but then so was Egeli and he wasted that free-kick. Ben Johnson must wonder what he has to do.
They defend as though their lives depend on it, yet have far weaker players than us. We still look like a team of individuals. I thought Jack Clarke, Matisuwa and Leif were our best players. Nunez needs Cajuste beside him.
Sammie looks like a fish out of water. It's puzzling. We have the components, but it's almost like they're the wrong ones, just shine a bit more sparkly. |  |

We dont have a number 10 at the club who can play how our number 10 needs to play.. thats the issue. Chappers and Omari both dropped very deep to pick the ball up, turn in tight spaces etc. Akpom and Szmodics are both second strikers, they arent playmakers. |  | | |

The defence is a strange one, player for player we have what we need in ability and profile but we look so nervous and weak at the back. Teams like Preston, Blackburn and Derby seem to scare our defence with just a simple ball into the central defence or running down wide.
I thought this year we would be dominant at the back and nullify most teams but we don't look like keeping a clean sheet in most games. |  | | |

Very quiet last night, aside from winning the pen. I've liked what I've seen of him until last night though, it was only his 3rd start with the other 2 being Sheff United in which he played well, and the abandoned game at Blackburn where I thought he did some good stuff in the 1st half before the game became a complete wash out. Ineffective last night though, needs to be busier. SS isn't the most natural when it comes to linking play in the 10 role but he does always look busy and I like that in a player. Nunez has got a bit of that as well, didn't always come off for him last night but he never stops showing for the ball and trying to influence things. |  | | |

It's one thing being a #10 in Middlesbrough & Blackburn sides, when you are being played off the striker, are seen as the main scoring threat in your team & have licence to go wide & cut in, but it's a different thing to be a central #10 as part of a high quality attacking 3 behind a centre forward, in a team which has a very high ranging attacking left back. |
I agree. And Szmodics has had to adapt his game as will Akpom. We shouldn't expect.them to hit the same numbers either but both are capable of it. | |

He is a 10. He was keen to come to us in part because of how we play the 10 role and it being where he wants to play. He isn't a 9 though provides a bit of additional cover if it was needed.
Akpom played 10 for Boro and scored 29 goals in his last season there. |
He didn't play the role that Chaplin played for us.
The reality is he largely played in a front 2 with Cameron Archer, but he was the one that would drop off the front line, but it was a completely different role to what we look for in a number 10 - at times he was picking the ball up from the CB in deep midfield position last night - it's not his strengths.
26 of his 29 goals for Boro were within 12 yards of the goal, and over 50% of them were from the 6 yard box or closer - he's a goalscorer, a finisher.
He has to be a number 9 for us, and a very very good one at that. |  | | |

Kierans undoubtedly a good coach and I've no doubt that he will make the absolute best of what he has got, but some of the recruitment seems to have been really poorly thought out without too much thought to who will play where and how their attributes fit the side. Szmodics and Akpom scream playing 2 up front but we will never do that, will we? They are wasted as 10s. |  | | |
