Last night, interesting and frustrating in equal measures. 08:04 - Oct 1 with 512 viewshomer_123

For a team with that many changes, there were times where we played really well, especially down the left hand side. We used the ball well and created openings and opportunities. Again, there was good link up play, good combinations and partnerships, a lot of runs off the ball.

However, credit Brizzle who got back in numbers extremely quickly and actually defended really well, and, for me, the main reason we rarely carved open guilt edged chances. Couple that with extremely quick transitions, they constantly caught us on the break without over committing. I have to say, I was impressed with them.

Although we played well at times, we lacked a little bit of urgency, I think we realised how quick Brizzle countered and I felt we had that in the back of our minds at times.

One of those where our early dominance needed a goal/ end product. Brizzle got their tails up and it was tough going from there.

On a side note, I think we looked less effective after the subs came on - we looked more disjointed and were very sloppy at times in possession and our decision making became pretty poor - not sure why, possibly chasing the game a bit too much, I'm not sure.

In the cold light of day, it's 1 point away from home and based on the overall performance, it's not really 2 points dropped - I think a draw was fair.

I think we lacked a lot of link up in the 10 role. Akpom was not at the races last night but hes had very little game time, the one time he did get amongst if we won a pen. Ive also been critical of szmodics though as for all the terror he causes im not sure what it adds up to yet. Chappers is a naturally creative player and that is needed jn the system

I'm going to throw this out there, we made too many changes. We didn't need to make six outfield changes for last night's game and it's no wonder we looked disjointed at times, particularly up front with a completely changed front four. I get McKenna's rationale, but you can get members of the group involved making 2 or 3 changes, it didn't have to be such wholesale change last night. I would disagree about us creating, I don't think we created a lot given the amount of possession we had.

We certainly struggled to do anything meaningful through the middle for the majority of the match.

Our best work was down the left (again).

Agreed. 6 changes makes no sense when the powers that be say we need time to gel.

In order to gel, we need a consistent team selection.

1 or 2 changes maybe. Not 6.

It looked like we were especially vulnerable to the quick break, I feel this is a longstanding issue especially on our left, but last night more so than usual and on both sides as well as through the middle.

Did we over commit going forward? Bristol especially good on the counter? Nunez being less defensive than Cajuste? Less effect pressing from the front 4 ? Or just one of those games?

With a slightly longer term view though, getting the whole squad to gel might require rotation now, and thus take a little longer but pay great dividends later in the season.

Yup, I agree with you on this. I think we could've gone for 2-3 changes max. if we then find ourselves 2 or 3 goals up at halftime, then sure, make wholesale changes for the second half to rest the others.

Chopping and changing hardly ever results in joined up play. As we found out last season (mostly not through our own choice, I add!). For all that McKenna got right in his first 2 and a half seasons, I think he's made a few dodgy decisions in the last 18 months. There's been more than a handful of questionable signings and a few baffling tactical decisions too. I'm not saying he needs to go, or any silly bollox like that. I am finding myself questioning his thinking more and more, though.
