Set Pieces 10:10 - Oct 1 with 1161 views | martinreusersgloves | It seems we're not exactly great at English football's hottest new trend: the set-piece. Two goals conceded in two games from pretty basic corners, and our delivery wasn't great against Bristol City. Then, the BBC run an article about FC Midtjylland and their set-piece innovations featuring plenty of quotes from our new set-piece coach: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cvg91gzpzl5o Does this mean we can expect improvements in the near future?

And have you noticed whenever we have a throw in, we look like rabbits in a headlight and more often than not end up punting it forward and lose the ball.

Set Pieces on 10:17 - Oct 1 with 1100 views | SheffordBlue | Offensively we've often tried to overload the back post and Greaves/O'Shea have fairly regularly managed to get a head on it - either back across the box or towards goal - just without the end product. Last night Hirst went over to Philogene and they were talking for a bit before the corner that led to Hirst's header that went just over. For that one our blockers did a good job of stopping the City defenders from moving out to Hirst who got his header away relatively unchallenged. I think we are doing some things quite well attacking - the pay off will come.

That’s it, that’s all you need to do on set pieces. You don’t need to pay some cnt with a laptop & an earpiece for that.

I think offensively we've carried some threat from them. Won the pen at Brum from a far post corner, Greaves scored against Derby, O'Shea had a great chance in the same game, he and Hirst have had 1 or 2 others. Those late free kicks last night weren't our finest hour. Defensively poor though, the last 2 goals we've conceded are so soft.

Yup - interesting to hear McKenna's comments on it last night "some details gone wrong". I think with the zonal approach we take everyone needs to know when to hold their zone and when to go and challenge. Against Pompey Kipre seemed late going for it, last night Furlong just seemed to miss his header with the blocker on the City player not keeping Furlong free to clear it.

There was a good one the other day talking about the importance of blocking runners, who's job is to clear a path for the fella attacking the ball at a corner.

I'm no expert but even I know having 4 of your players attacking the ball at the same time is a bad idea.

I remember when people had similarly dismissive attitudes to "all this psychology mumbo-jumbo" in football. And before that ex-players laughing about nutritionists "You can't play football if you've only eaten a salad!" Sport is all about incremental gains. Anything that gives an edge. Whether that is a laptop, an earpiece, or a cnt! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You’ve just compared set pieces to mental health. Brilliant. No, I take your point & my original post lacks rationale however I do feel as though set pieces are being over complicated & over analysed some what.

Set Pieces on 14:04 - Oct 1 with 647 views | GlasgowBlue | Before we had Mark Hudson when we were in League One and the Championship, Leif Davis took the majority of our set pieces and we were brilliant. Now Leif doesn't take half our corners.

That's not fair... I was talking about the early days of Sports Psychology, which was very much focused on performance and positive thinking, and methods like visualisation, rather than a mental wellness approach.

problem for me with zonal marking is that the opposition big guys can target who they think they can dominate. You had McClean all over Philogene, complete physical mismatch. To be fair Norwich had a lot of corners and not much came from them (apart from the goal), so we did okay. Even the goal conceded via the corner was from a defender clearing header so we had done half the job.
