New Archbishop of Canterbury 17:13 - Oct 3 with 729 views | Keno | Is an interesting appointment! Some of the CofE really are a bit mindless and show a distinct lack of awareness of their own faiths teachings https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2lxyxqzxkdo [Post edited 3 Oct 17:13]

New Archbishop of Canterbury on 17:34 - Oct 3 with 645 views | Zx1988 | It's an interesting one. A good generally-progressive appointment that I welcome. Interesting to see the mental gymnastics from certain elements of the Church, in particular the statement from the See of Richborough (traditionalists who reject the authority of women). A fairly mealy-mouthed statement that they stand by their beliefs, but feel that their position is best served within the Church, and that the Church would be poorer for their absence. Absolutely nothing to do, of course, with the fact that the Bishop and clergy would lose all of the trappings of the CofE (palaces, houses, stipends, places of worship etc.,) if they decided that they felt so strongly about their beliefs that they could not serve under a female Archbishop. Funny that.

My frustration is that it's another part of the establishment we seem unable to shake off, with the PM, of whatever political colour, giving the church far more attention than it deserves.

If you have any understanding of the New Testament is absolutely no justification to the non ordination of women, none what so ever

I had a look at the latter section. If anyone opposes the appointment on that basis, I assume they also oppose women working as teachers or lecturers in co-ed settings or allowing them to have any form of managerial position over male co-workers. (for reference it says "I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man, she must be quiet.")

LOL Apostle Paul sounds a right reprobate with comments like that.

Doesn't seem to counteract the Paul stuff. The point is, its the big book of multiple choice. The bigots can find entirely viable and logical support for their positions in there if they wish.

That's what really irks me with some of the discriminatory and, frankly, hateful positions that certain Christians take. Yes you've got bits and bobs that'll support any position but, at the core of it all, you've got Mark 12:28-31: One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Love God, love everyone else (even them). End of.

Sorry Firstly Christianity is or at least should be based on the teaching on Christ, the clue is in the name If the first instruction given to any to tell others the news of the resurrection is to a woman how can anyone thereafter Paul included, deny the right of a woman? It’s a big but on this and many other topics there should be no options The options arise where mankind in general or the Catholic Church in particular, corrupt and bastardise a simple message for their own reasons

The argument doesnt work when the most clear instruction is bigotted, and large portions of the church are happy to adopt it. You cant say "this is the good choice, so even if the book we say is the truth says something different in different places, its the only choice to make". If the book was divine it would not be so readily ambiguous. And the false distancing from the old testament is equally problematic. Without it, the prophecy element supporting Jesus divinity is hopeless. [Post edited 3 Oct 23:09]

If Christians can’t even agree amongst themselves what’s right and what isn’t, never mind agree with other religions about which of their Gods it is that’s the ‘One’ whose word should be taken as ‘gospel’, that doesn’t say much for any organised religion in my view. And I know organised religion does do a lot of good around the world, but it also does an awful lot of harm. Mother Nature will always be the only ‘god’ for me.
