Speedway final tonight on 22:50 - Oct 9 by Trequartista | Speedway used to massive back in the day, kids wanted to be Tiger Louis or Shrimp Davey in the playground. Now it's on life support. Doesn't even make "Other Sports" now on bbc or sky. Perhaps it missed out on innovations that might have made races more interesting. I don't think there will be a national league by the end of the decade. |
very much like greyhound racing, massive in the 30's to 50's and has declined to next to nothing. I am glad Sky still support it or it would be completely off the radar. Used to have massive crowds for dog racing and speedway at White City Stadium, London

Agree, although probably for different reasons, I would expect all sport involving animals to be gone in the future.

Sky don’t support it, TNT do. It’s a shame it’s on the state it’s in, there’s various factors why. But my earliest memory is going to Foxhall as a toddler with my parents to watch Louis, Sanders and co.

And I was watching it so should have known. Actually Sky had backed speedway for many years but TNT have obviously pinched it, having 4 channels to fill. Like you I watched them in the late 70's. Add in Cowboy Ted Howgego, Mike Lanham, Kevin Jolly and Dave Gooderham. Billy Sanders and John Louis were certainly the main men.

Here I am in sunny Florida, scrolling around looking for the England v Wales game and came across the speedway on TNT channel. Tuned in and that was it, I was hooked! I've only ever been to that stadium a handful of times in the early 70's, and only once for the speedway. That was for the reintroduction of speedway in Ipswich after a few years break. I'm thinking that would be in 72/73 against Hackney with 16,000 or more turning up unless anyone can correct me.

I’m pretty sure it was 1969 when speedway returned.

Speedway final tonight on 08:09 - Oct 10 with 529 views | DJR | As someone who occasionally went in the 70s this is excellent news but it doesn't even get the coverage it deserves in today's Ipswich Star. Their report mentions a huge crowd but doesn't say what it was. Anyone know the actual number? [Post edited 10 Oct 8:15]

On the TV this morning they said over 4k. Official capacity is 10k, felt around half full (to an old footie style full terrace) so 4 to 5k seems about right. [Post edited 10 Oct 8:51]

Do you think it being on TV knocked the attendance down dramatically ?

Not significantly… like with football, everyone wants to go to the big games, whether it’s on tv or not. Riders were more than happy to sign autographs and have selfies for at least an hour after the presentations had finished as well.

Speedway final tonight on 09:45 - Oct 10 with 369 views | Bluemike31 | Was an excellent night last night and so pleased for the boys to get the job done, every Rider played their part in what was a decent meeting. The crowd was massive and they had to open extra stands to accommodate them all, been the best team all season so well deserved. Glad I was there to see them crowned champions.

Think the final made it the biggest crowd for a long time. Normally not that busy, but last night really packed. Opened the stand on the third bend, which I have not seen for ages. Being motor sport though facilities are a bit meh!

The facilities at Foxhall are the some of the best around in short oval racing (so speedway or stock cars), and a lot better than they were even relatively recently (15 or so years ago), with two grandstands, proper brick built catering facilities, corporate boxes and improved lighting…. Spedeworth have invested thousands in the place. Whether that’s measuring against a low bar or not is another matter, but given the threat short oval venues face from NIMBYs and property developers, we need to be grateful and support the few that have managed to survive this long.

Went to school with Carl Baldwin. He was a bit of a celeb really as he was really pretty good as a junior.
