I'd have said no and call his bluff. If he abandoned it I doubt he would ever ref again.

Truly impaired.

Couple of weekends ago, at my daughters U12’s game, an opposition player called the ref a knob head after the final whistle! Ref could only have been 15/16 years old.

The ref was put in a very difficult position by the lino complaining to him about it. Once the lino says it is abuse that they are not willing to put up with then the ref has to back them up.

In my opinion, the ref should have said to the spectator:

"Stop abusing my assistant. If you continue, I will stop the game and ask for you to be ejected."

Then he would have been totally justified in this action if the spectator did it again.

What we don't know from this tweet is whether the spectator was following the lino up and down the touchline and verbally harassing him,* putting him off his job (at one extreme) or just said it once (at the other).

* I'm guessing it was a male lino, as what kind of a knobhead calls a woman a knobhead?

I’ve run the line so many times for both my daughters and my son’s teams.

I’ve never been called anything as nice as knobhead.

I’m not great though, although I think I’ve improved over the years.

They probably on reflection realise they haven't handled this great but I imagine the fan didn't say it once or just say that only.

In any case unless it was a a lot worse then that they should have just given a warning and if it persisted then more grounds.

feel a bit bad for them because they just ended up looking ridiculous. Nobody handled that great. Chairman should also have just said. I take your point and we will give him a final warning. Then they could all of just got on with it and all saved face.

Years ago I was watching a non-league match and my mate shouts out at the top of his voice "the referee's a con", the ref, mis-heard and thought he had shouted "the referee's a cu^t" he stoped the match came over to the stand and cautionioned my friend saying he would be ejected.

I refereed one of my son's games when the proper ref didn't turn up.

All I got was abuse from the opposition coach, so whilst the the game was going on I shouted at him to piss off and stop his moaning. We then had a bit of a row but he subsequently did stop.

Maybe not a good example to set to the kids, but neither was the coach's, and there came a point when I just couldn't take it any more given I was a mere volunteer.

I suppose though proper refs have to just grin it and bear it.

I did a couple of Sunday league games when a ref hadn't shown up.

In one, I gave a pen after two players took out the striker and got lots of "never touched him" crp from the defenders, even as he was stretchered off.

Week later the manager finds me to sign the insurance forms, turned out the lad who wasn't touched had a broken leg.

Why should the ref or lino put up with abuse? It's very ingrained into the culture of football that it's fine to go after these individuals.

People think it's ok just because they have bought a ticket to be able to say what they want. Got to remember that they are people too.

Imagine going into the office each day and somebody that you don't know from another part of the company walks past your desk every now and then and calls you a nob head. Would you put up with it?

Yes i am hypercritical as I've joined in the chanting at grounds over the years, but seeing my daughter play football on a Sunday and hearing some of the language that parents use, I am certainly moving away from it. Especially the use of the c word.

Bonkers.
