| A long way off 22:28 - Oct 17 with 1276 views | itfcsuth | McKenna said it best himself. I said tonight would be an indicator to where we are/going to be. Could we’ll be 15th/16th tomorrow night after 10 games. Ashton and co have done incredibly well to dismantle a very special group and spend £125m to make us go backwards. Staggering lack of quality and cohesion - absolutely miles away. | | | | |

Unfortunately there are no guarantees there - could just as easily draw the next two and be further adrift. Look miles away - we look a very ordinary Championship side. At this point in 23/24 we’d W7, D1, L1. [Post edited 17 Oct 22:45]

If we continue on this general upward curve we will be too strong for most teams in this division.

Upward curve from 4 years ago in L1, that is very true. We should be in a better position that we are now though with what the back to back group did for this club - the finances and opportunities that created. But we are certainly on a downward trend currently, collective team looks a backwards step from 23/24 - some concerning signs. Haven’t seen anywhere near enough consistently to suggest we will be too strong for most teams . 9 games in we have won 3 matches.

Is it an upward curve if you don't win any away games. I know home form is important but you've got to win away too.

I'm talking purely this season. Last season, the season before and the season before that don't come into it. This is an almost entirely new team. In almost every position we have an upgrade. Not all of them played at their best tonight, but generally they are growing into it. Matisuwa for example has been growing into the league and has been fantastic in the last couple of games but wasn't on it tonight. Likewise Kipre. Philogene too.

We definitely don’t have an upgrade in every position. You can run through the group: Palmer - Hladky - Equal Furlong - Tuanzebe - Downgrade O’Shea - Woolfenden - Upgrade Greaves/Kipre - Burgess - Downgrade Davis - Equal Matusiwa - Morsy - Upgrade Cajuste/Nunez - Mass - Upgrade Egeli/McAteer - Burns/Omari - Downgrade Szmodics/Akpom - Chaplin - Downgrade Philogene/Clarke - Broadhead - Downgrade Hirst - Equal I don’t know what you are seeing, but we look a long way away from our previous Championship side, despite having £125m+ invested in it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I respectfully disagree. Furlong has been solid and if he stays fit will be just as good as Tuanzebe. And if he stays fit then more reliable. Kipre is definitely an upgrade and Greaves is at least on par with Burgess, who was immense for us. Egeli ISA young chap who will take time to grow into English football, but has shown enough to convince me that when he has he'll be better than Burns (who I will still welcome back gladly) and maybe even Omari. McAteer I think will be good back-up. Akpom has struggled, but again, get him on form could be fantastic. Szmodics has been injury hit but I think has been good for us this season even without scoring. Philogene. Really? Not sure what more he has to do. Clarke has been getting better and better and shown what he can do at his level. Hirst has shown what he can do at this level and needs a bit of confidence. Azon looks great and will get a few goals for us I believe. All told, a better squad, which is settling down, despite this setback. As I've recognised elsewhere something isn't quite right with how we're approaching away games, but I'm sure we'll work it out.

Some interesting views in there. Struggle to see anything you’re really seeing there though. Taking time to settle does always take a period of time, but you would really want to see some indicators in there - we aren’t seeing anywhere near enough. Squad looks unbalanced in areas, and looks like it lacks real quality in key departments, lacks cohesion and confidence in their play. Look so far away from where we need to be, the fear being we drift so far behind we ultimately run out of time to catch up - and whilst it would surprise me with what I’ve seen so far, if we fail to be competing at the very top end of the division, it will be an almighty disaster of season. Where that would leave us going forward, with the astronomical money we’ve spent to build this squad, who knows.

Many of those seem reasonable. There’s no way Billy Jean is a downgrade on Broady though. He’s a different type of player, but certainly a better one. And I liked Broady. You could argue he was a better fit, and that would have some merit. But not a better player. Broady’s another one who seems to get better the longer we don’t see him.

We haven't won away, as you say. Neither have we beaten any side in the top half, home or away.

I am sorry but this team is just not good enough. A good win over a poor Norwich side does not make us world beaters.
| A long way off on 12:13 - Oct 18 with 371 views | OldFart71 | I agree with lack of cohesion, but not quality. The quality is there but for whatever reason we aren't a team. Just a load of individuals. Whilst I am not singling out one player Hirst as a striker seems completely off his game. Only my opinion, but he could have had a hat trick against the Budgies and missed a pen last night. I think he should be dropped to the bench and Azon given a go for a few games. It's possible it may not be our year, who knows. If it's not then what will the fallout be ? At least several of the players we won't have to buy. Will Gamechanger and Co be happy to spend another season in the Championship. Early days though. Therefore we need to put some sort of run together which currently we don't seem capable of. | | | |
| A long way off on 12:21 - Oct 18 with 345 views | BouncebackIpswich | I don't really see how anyone can disagree with this. We've spent tens of millions to make the team worse. Give me the 2023/24 team over this lot any day of the week. Making top 6 has to be the aim now and hope we've finally gelled enough by then to win the playoffs. | | | |

Philogene is a talented boy, but he’s so patchy it’s unbelievable, and if he isn’t scoring a worldie, which he certainly is capable of, he literally carries no threat. He doesn’t beat his man, he isn’t particularly strong, he doesn’t carry electric pace, he doesn’t particularly carry the ball well, he doesn’t particularly create much for team mates, and last night even the most basic things like his first touch and simple passing was below par. Broady still clear for me, if he’s a better fit for us, he’s a better player for us. We miss that connection and cohesion of Broadhead, Chaplin, Burns so much - the disrespect and disregarding of them is one of the most baffling decisions this club has made by a long way - and one that has proven to be drastically wrong. If we fail this year, you would imagine there will be significant consequences. We won’t be able to spend big, we won’t be able to plan with the likelihood of future PL money, we will have to operate within a ‘Championship’ teams financial constraints again. I wouldn’t trust Ashton and co with another penny anyway, in terms of recruitment, we look woefully poor at this ‘player trading’ game. KMc has operated far better with very shrewd, low fee, undervalued, well balanced, team first, modest group of players he developed to levels we could never have imagined - he would need to do so again.
