I should have checked before specifying you directly there, and I apologise for doing so. You don't say that in any of what remain of your posts on that thread. Several have been edited, though.

I will leave my error up, with this acknowledgement that it is an error, rather than edit it.

It was a different poster in that thread who accused WMP of (Anti Jewish) Racism. They didn't say "Anti Semitism" directly, but that is the term for Anti Jewish Racism.

I appreciate the apology and I've asked Phil to withdraw the abuse report.

As somebody with immediate Jewish family, I take antisemitism extremely seriously and don't throw the word around lightly. To clarify, I don't believe for one minute that the decision to ban Maccabi fans is in anyway anti semitic.

I've also edited the final line of my op which was uncalled for.

Once again, I appreciate the apology.

A statement from Hapoel

Translation for non Hebrew speakers:

Hapoel Tel Aviv Football Club's response to the derby events:

Even from the preliminary discussions before the match, it appeared that the police were preparing for a war rather than a sporting event.

The shocking incidents outside the stadium and following the reckless and scandalous decision to cancel the match only demonstrate that the Israel Police have taken control of the sport.

When we sought explanations in real time, we were met with degrading and humiliating treatment, without any dialogue, as were the representatives of the Football Association and the League Administration who tried to reverse this bizarre decision. When the district commander, Haim Sargrof, was asked to speak with the League Administration chairman Erez Kalfon and the Football Association chairman Shino Zoaretz, he refused, stating that his decision was final. He spoke of numerous injuries from the throwing of pyrotechnic devices, but in reality, most of the injuries from the event were actually caused by the brutal police violence at the end of the match, as a direct result of the scandalous decision to cancel the event.

Everyone saw the disturbing videos—children trampled by horses, police officers beating fans indiscriminately. The police have taken over the sport—and we call from here on the leaders of Israeli football to do everything in their power to put an end to this, otherwise there will be no football here.

It goes without saying that the club's management condemns all acts of violence—and will fight against lawbreakers, even if they are wearing uniforms.

Also from a Guardian and Athletic contributing journalist.

Perhaps those so quick to point the fingr at Maccabi here will own up to their mistake.

That's a partial reading of the reasons given, and also of the wider context around those fans.

I don't speak Hebrew, so can't translate, but if things that I have read that their fans have chanted were to be chanted in Aston then there would be considerable risk of major disturbances and public safety would be severely threatened.

and the police should deal with such things appropriately. using a such a possibility as a excuse to pre-emptively ban those fans, when, as gb has listed, such problems didn't arise when those fans attended matches in other european cities, is indefensible. many uk clubs have fans who have chanted appalling things - we don't ban all fans of those clubs from travelling. we just expect the police to police illegality if it occurs.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Fancy that, someone from Israel blaming the victims of their actions when asked to be accountable for them.

Surely you're not siding with terrorist supporting far right settler and war criminal Netanyahu enabler, Itamar Ben Gvir on this? I'm pretty certain that he'd be very keen on giving the Hapoel fans a good kicking.

The club name, "Hapoel", translates to "The Worker", and combined with its red Hammer and sickle badge represents the club ties to Marxism, socialism, Labor Zionism, and the working class.

Ultras Hapoel often wave flags emblazoned with the faces of Che Guevara and Karl Marx, as well as banners with the slogan "Workers of the world, unite". The club ultras has friendships with many other antifa supporter groups, including strong bonds with fans of FC St. Pauli, Standard Liège and Omonia Nicosia.

A Haaretz poll published in June 2011 identified Hapoel Tel Aviv as the second most popular football team among Israeli Arabs, behind Maccabi Haifa.

Just the sort of thing that Netanyahu would like to see stamped out in Israel.

They share a ground. Hapoel Tel Aviv were the designated home team that day. You may be unfamiliar with how groundsharing works when the two teams who share a ground play each other one of the teams is designated home and the other away. Maccabi will be the home team in the corresponding fixture.

https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=95179f060af123b5&sxsrf=AE3TifNCHL_2mFK

The clips show it was the Hapoel fans launching flares and clashing with the police. It's like showing a clip of Manchester United fans causing trouble and people trying to put the blame on Manchester City fans.

Anyone dloing that is either incredibly stupid or incredibly dishonest.
[Post edited 20 Oct 12:56]

I'm familiar with how ground sharing works.

You glossed over the fact your source is making his own interprétations on selected images from his home in London.

I got a very different take on events from the Israeli media. For a wholly domestic event, it makes sense to look at the local press, rather than a London based X user.

On top of that, for you to present that as "the truth" is lazy at best.

The Israeli press seem to be taking the police line that the blame lies with the Hapoel Tel Aviv fans. I'm surprised you are taking the side of the Israeli state over that of a football club founded by socialists and popular with Israeli Arabs. Especially as the footage shows the police indiscriminately beating young fans.

btw I literally posted a link from a local journalist who contributes to the Guardian and th Athletic. I'll post it again in case you missed it.

The footage clearly shows the Israeli state police indiscriminately kicking the fook out of kids in Hapoel Tel Aviv football shirts.

Obviously their fans were the ones throwing the military grade flares in the ground but the majority of the injuries came from the police beating Hapoel Tel Aviv fans.

Regardless, Maccabi were not the issue here.

I think it's gone well. Once we established the difference between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv. Hapoel Tel Aviv are the ones in red for those watching in black and white.

Anyway, I'm off now to to a Man City forum to congratulate their fans for yesterday's win over Liverpool.

To use your Manchester derby example. If fighting broke out between United and City. Would you take the word of one if the clubs involved.

As a strong supporter of Israel, I wouldn't attach too much relevance to the founders of any entity as Israel itself was founded in large part by Zionist antisemites.

But anyway, I didn't really see how any follower of Maccabi Tel Aviv can really complain about the Birmingham police not wanting to police a match in a city with a large Muslim population when the police in Tel Aviv themselves can't cope when Maccabi are playing Hapoel in a local derby.

I imagine the authorities in this country will contact the authorities in Israel to get to the bottom of what actually went on rather than rely on media and social media reports.

Why is it still being referred to as the Maccabi Tel Aviv match when the instigators were Hapoel Tel Aviv, your guardian link clearly shows their coloured flares, and the majority of the violence was carried out by Ben Gvir’s state police on Hapoel Tel Aviv fans?

Watch every news clip on TV . They mention Maccabi fans but it’s red and white flares and it’s red shirted fans being beaten by the police.p that they show.

It’s almost as if there is an agenda at play.

I think it is obvious why it is referred to as the Maccabi Tel Aviv match in the headline but the sub-headline is

"Maccabi say rivals to blame for crowd trouble while UK government still wants ban lifted for Aston Villa game"

In any event, it is surely better that the police investigate this matter to get to the bottom of it.
