Football fans from the 1970's, please help me out 16:33 - Oct 21 with 693 viewsGlasgowBlue

Am I correct in remembering as a young boy that Matc of The day featured not just highlights from selected top flight games but also one or two games from the second division?

I know the Big Match on Sunday afternoons did. Did MOTD?

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Yes it did sometimes, not every week and perhaps not very often

It was before my time, but as a youngster I had the 25 Years of Match of The Day Ipswich Town Addition on video, and that had a clip from the 68 promotion season, with ours being the featured game on MOTD.

Thanks. It got me thinking about how Lineker, Shearer etc looked down on us and the other two promoted teams* when we were in the Premier League. Perhaps if the hosts and pundits had exposure to the Championship games they would treat us with the respect we deserve.

Just a random thought that came into my head for no reason in particular.

*Leicester excepted in Lineker's case.

In the 1980's, the Beeb also started MOTD live on a Friday night. 9 times out of 10, either Man Utd (despite being crap frankly) or Liverpool were featured.

They did slip in the odd top Dvision two fixture though. I definitely recall Chelsea v Man C (which doesn't sound very div 2 now) being on once.

The Big Match on ITV covered matches even further down the divisions.

Have no recollection of Friday night MOTD. How long was that a thing?

Between 83-86 (ish)

Then I think the beeb lost live screening rights (except FAC) to ITV.

This is the game i most remember of those screened on the Friday, mainly due to our very own Alan Brazil scoring for Spurs.

I remember that on 6th January 1968, there was much excitement as Town were featured on MOTD for the first time. It was against Birmingham City, and we were challenging for promotion from the old Second Division to the First Division. We won 2-1 with Ron Wigg scoring both Town goals. The town went on to become the 2nd Division champions under Bill McGarry.
In my opinion, MOTD was far better when it included football from ALL divisions, not just the top one.

They even went to Div 3 on occasion.

Defo they had lower league games , my brother in law massive Chelsea fan and I used to follow them as well as Town in late 70s early 80s and remember they beat Newcastle 6-0 in 1980ish Div2 and that was defo on MoTD as we had just got a video and years later we found the recording.
