| We should be third... on 15:49 - Oct 23 by Smoresy | I wouldn't like to attribute that post to your age. I'm far from ageist. The final table is what counts, no doubt. Is it the be-all and end-all for strategic planning, for whether to rip up a team or cast out a manager? It shouldn't be the only consideration imo; that's too simplistic. You'd miss important trends, those which could inform you on the likelihood that a situation may improve without drastic intervention. Were you just missing a GK who could catch a ball, with many good pieces already on the board for instance? The league table couldn't answer that question alone. This alternative table informs us that there's a more-than-reasonable chance our circumstances will improve without drastic action, without parachuting in Neil Warnock or signing another ten new players in January. And by circumstances I mean the actual league table. It won't improve if we defend and shoot like we did against Charlton, obviously, but the odds are in our favour that we won't repeatedly shoot and defend like we did against Charlton until infinity. |
Thank you for your kind remark re age. I actually have two degrees, one in a professional institution and one a management degree but hey stats rule in the present world, no matter that you are not performing.

There's an insatiable appetite for seeking more ways to understand, present and give meaning to information, isn't there? And with that comes more ways to misuse and misinterpret information, as well as to become bogged down in the meaningless. I appreciate and align myself with some of the naysaying and sneering attitudes in this thread. Stats don't butter my spinach for me, nor do they increase my enjoyment of football very much. And they won't convince me that the last two games have been anything other than defensively shambolic at times, nor will they put the ball in the back of the net for Hirst, who like others is going through a particularly fallow spell. Actually, stats sitting innocent in their spreadsheet cells wouldn't deign to do any such thing . The genie's long shot out of the bottle for those working in the industry though, and regrettably football is huge business. Closing one's doors to stats and data is a surefire way to gain a competitive disadvantage, to become far less efficient, and so no serious club would consider it. Of course crucial information is also gathered with expert eyes; no serious club would be without those either.

For anyone who doubts the incremental benefits of stats analysis (plus performance and wellbeing analysis, and the other modern sciences being applied to sport), I would just reference the late 90s/early 00s and Sir Clive Woodward.

| We should be third... on 15:36 - Oct 23 by Nthsuffolkblue | I was at Preston and we battered them nearly all game but didn't take our chances. It wasn't as one-sided as that embarrassing FA Cup defeat a few seasons ago but it wasn't far off. The idea that we were poor apart from a few spells in that one is way off the mark. |
I was at Preston and remember thinking we could be playing until midnight and still wouldn’t score. As for battering them despite having a lot of possession we still only managed 2 shots on target.

Think we’ve been pretty poor all season apart from Shef Utd and maybe Norwich but was that because we were good or they were poor? Pompey I thought we were ok but not great. Derby, Preston, Blackburn, Boro, Birmingham, Southampton and Bristol City - been pretty poor in all of them apart from a few spells in some of them! |
This cracked me up. | |
