Assuming NBA basketball isn’t very big in England 17:46 - Oct 23 with 1067 viewsIllinoisblue

But even so, insane story this morning, players and a coach arrested by the FBI this morning, accused of being involved in a massive gambling racket involving the mafia. There’s a clip of a player said to be involved and, yeah, not a good look.

That footage reminds me of when the Pakistan bowler got done for spot fixing no balls a few years back. At least make it look like it might be a genuine cock up, ffs.

I don't watch Basketball, so I might not be the best judge, but besides the 2/3 horrendous passes at the very start, are the rest of the plays that bad? Likely obviously he missed several shots, but half of those shots still get rim or he looks off balance for a few? Maybe I've just underestimated the conversion rate for shots in NBA though.

Gambling ads have infiltrated the mainstream here over the last couple of years in a massive way. We still don’t have a ladbrokes or William hills equivalent on high streets but who would need them anyway when you can gamble your last penny away via your phone.

In isolation some of those shots aren’t terrible, but given the context as well as him giving the ball away so obviously….

Wow!

I watched a 30 for 30 called "Playing the Mob" about Boston College in the late 70s and seems like it might have a sequel!

Considering legalized sports gambling is relatively new in the US, this might have big implications.

As someone who has watched a fair bit of basketball, the first two turnovers look a bit suspect, but the rest of the clip just looks like someone having a tough night.

If its proven, that's a hell of a case. Chauncey Billups was a proper player back in the day, multiple all-star appearances, huge salary etc. Throwing or fixing games would be insane.

Betting in the US for Basketball and Football mainly involves points when it comes to gamblers. So say one team gets a +6 or whatever. So the team could technically still win the game and throw it at the same time.

Huge scandal with Boston College and points shaving back in the day.

Some incredible sign up bonuses over there. Can make a mint in one weekend as a US citizen.

That makes a lot of sense. US sports are incredibly data driven, the 3 point percentage and turnover rate are two statistics which are commonly referenced during a game, and the two which appear to be in question here. Wouldn't surprise me if you can get a market on more or less than 40% 3 point efforts made in a game for instance.

Perhaps could explain the differential between our shots on and off target on Tuesday? That sort of ratio should be investigated by the authorities...

Worth pointing out that Billups’ arrest isn’t related to Basketball, but instead ‘just’ for being involved in fixed poker games with the mafia, as you do!

I watched a game last year and with about 10 seconds to go and 20 points ahead, one player got it and went for a random three despite both teams having run the game out for the last minute. Catch and shoot situation desperately blatant that it was gambling eaters

All the lads on the sideline were going crazy for it. They all obviously knew what it was about. Coach was high fiving him etc straight away as it ended. Think it was a Rockets game from memory but can’t remember if they were the team who were doing it or the opposition. Almost certainly was related to some form of spread being covered for that player. Remember a few tweets about it at the time how suspect it was. Player attempted shots or something like that as it was a shot for shots sake.
