But thank you for that pass in 78 to Roger Osborne. Never forgotten.

A real ‘character’ of the time.

I heard in one of the obituaries to Paul Mariner that when PM went to Arsenal, Willie was by then a squad player near the end of his career. He went in the dressing room, saw Paul and said something like ‘you took me to the cleaners at Wembley, now you’ve taken my ffing peg!’. Well something like that.

Young was not the best CH I ever saw. But he wasn’t the worst. Good in the air, knew all about a tackle and could look after himself. Very large and by the standards of the day and good at what he did. Had a good partnership with the younger more mobile David O’Leary.

RIP. Thanks for the memories Mr Young.

Back when banners were amusing as opposed to twenty metre tifos that say nothing.

Also remember ‘Rich Osborne never crumbles’ and ‘Big game Hunter guns ‘em’ at Wembley that day.

Bread and butter CB...
Think it was his "professional foul" on Paul Allen in the 1980 cup final, (Arsenal/West Ham) That led to the laws of the game being looked at.
R.I.P. Big man.

My old man had a "Mills grinds Rice" banner that day.

That's sad to hear.

I remember him becoming aquainted with Joe Jordan's teeth in the 79 final.

Also one of the few to cross the divide.

Go well Willie.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

On a side note: can anyone identify the pub(?) where the supporters are shown celebrating the goal?

Go to 9.01 here as I believe this is an outside shot of the place. I couldn't identify it myself but it looks somewhere rural to me.

Couldn't id pub, but wondered if it would be one near where Osborne family are from

“Regulars and reformed backsliders alike had a vital part to play”. What a great term for plastic fans, ‘reformed backsliders’.

I always thought it looked a bit like The Freston Boot? In the days when pubs shut at 2, must've been a lock in! My fave bit of the doc'!

Forgotten how crap the Wembley pitch was that day. Our end of that old stadium was rocking for the rest of the match. Remember too Malcolm McDonald applauding us as he went off. Class act.

I was in that end (the Tunnel End) in the ‘gallery’ as the standing area behind the goal was known. It held 20,000 supporters as did the one the other end. It was absolutely deafening. The sound seemed to get louder as the game went on.

I don’t think anyone was quite believing what we were seeing. We were good first half but didn’t stop and when Jennings made the save from GB and Wark hit the post twice, instead of ‘oh it’s not going to happen’, you could feel the crowd pushing on as the team pushed on.

When Roger scored (I was wrong end of course but right in line with his shot), it was like a dam breaking. The noise. It went crazy. I went down many a terrace step - and they were big! Bodies, banners, hats, stuff, total mayhem and joy. My dad disappeared somewhere and everybody lost it. There was a fair amount of booze passed around the crowd that day which did no harm. The noise remained at the same level, but everyone knew we’d done it.

Yes, MacDonald applauded the supporters. In fact most if not all the Arsenal players did. Different times. As for the pitch it was always heavy by that time of the year. It was better than most domestic pitches and although players were used to the latter, Wembley was bigger and more energy sapping.

I can’t remember much about that day really. A kaleidoscope of memories that are so long ago it’s like somebody else’s patchy movie played in your own head. I’ve still got my ticket so I must have been there! And I was.

Plus Mariner hitting the bar in the first half, when it seemed easier to score.
While Hunter & Beattie only passed fitness tests on the morning of the game, some of the Arsenal players also weren't fully fit, probably Hudson, who had a very quiet game.
Yes, it had rained for 2 days before the game so the pitch cut up, which wasn't unusual for Wembley in those days.
