Probably the closest to a more traditional Labour candidate from the likely runners and riders, but the media would never allow a northern, left-leaning, working class single mum anything like a fair hearing.

people like swansea always try to frame this as 'you're either in favour of immigration or you're against immigration'. whereas in reality the public debate is about the level of immigration that people want.

for many years a majority of the population have considered the level of net immigration to be too high - and politicians have simply ignored them. the latest yougov figure is that 71% now think immigration has been too high.

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/po

no party has a democratic mandate to continue with net immigration as high as it has been in recent years.

People are not even willing to have a conversation about it.

You either acknowledge the benefits and fall in line or you are racist.

That may be true for some people but it is a generalisation.

The issue I have is with the rhetoric and demonisation of immigrants per se. I have no problem with discussion of the best way to deal with processing asylum claims and providing safe routes for those claiming it. Nor with how a fairer system can even out the burden amongst safe countries. Nor allowing countries to appropriately deal with those (immigrants or otherwise) with dangerous extremist views that promote terrorism.
