So a reprise of that WC song but with amended lyrics.

Altogether now ...."We're on the march with Clarke-y's Army ......"

And perhaps England can re-release

We adopted and adapted the first tune for the cup final in 1978.

Back Home, still the best WC song.

Sadly, many in that video are no longer with us.

And yet still not as disappointing as England.

What a ridiculous comment. Scotland could only dream of the tournament success England have had. Do you say this kind of stuff just to look edgy or something?

Scotland may not have done well at tournaments but in terms of population size only Uruguay (with a lower population) has qualified for more World Cups.

And in 1974 and 1978, when Scotland were probably at their best, there were only 16 teams, with Scotland missing out on goal difference on each occasion from making it through to the last 8. Indeed, in 1974, three teams ended up on 4 points in their group.

Yes they often win 1 game and go out on goal difference or by some other unlucky event. It's quite a remarkable run though, even Saudi Arabia got through the group stage once.

How can the truth be edgy?
Scotland fans expect nothing and so are rarely disappointed.
England fans are all too often disappointed.

Based on what? Your perception. I have personally enjoyed our recent tournament success under Southgate. Yes, ultimately disappointing to lose in a final but a fantastic journey to get there. How can you be disappointed with that? As for Scotland fans, it does hurt them that their team never does well. Hence the bitterness toward England.

Lol, you think the Scots are bitter towards England because of football? Have you even met any Scottish people?

You're going off point now. I've been to Scotland many times and I find the Scottish people mostly very warm and welcoming so I dont see why you're trying to make them out to be hostile and bitter toward the English for whatever historical reasons. End of my discourse with you now I think. You can't fix stupid and belligerent.

I have. I married one, have 4 kids who are Scots, employed literally hundreds of Scots and socialise regularly with Scots.

I've rarely met anyone who is antagonistic towards England or the English except when it comes to football. It comes down top decades of watching English pundits bigging up our chances and going back to 1966.

In fact you seem more anti English than any Scot I have ever met.

I'd be interested to know if your kids support England or Scotland, or both.

As regards my children, my daughter would support Scotland but my son England.

Don't know why they never picked former Hearts and Rangers keeper Antti Niemi?

My son was brought up to support England but from High School onwards he's always supported both. The three girls all consider themselves Scottish before English and support Scotland.

So m y boy is heavily invested in both team when playing but very torn when they play each other whereas the girls take great pleasure in seeing England lose. Doesn't help that two of them have boyfriends who are Celtic supporters.

You could hear a pin drop in the bars of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro when the news came through of Scotland's qualification.

Brazil haven't won the WC for 68 years (1958) when Scotland have also qualified for the same finals.

5 goals in 14 games this season - based on minutes on the pitch this translates to just shy of one goal every two games.

In comparison, Che Adams has 2 in 10 (albeit in Serie A), and Dykes has 2 in 13 (and can barely get into Birmingham's starting XI).

Imagine how many he will score when his form returns!

Surely we need to base the stats on minutes on the pitch for all 3 of them, not only for Hirst?

You're right, Dykes hardly plays. But consequently, he has more goals per 90 than Hirst, and a higher xG per 90 than Hirst. He also has a higher conversion rate of goals from xG.

Adams has a lesser set of stats, but in Serie A as you acknowledge. He's only played about half of the equivalent minutes of 10 whole games. He has a decent enough record of scoring for Scotland.

This is all a really small sample size, and certainly doesn't prove that anyone in particular should be starting. Shankland is scoring in his day job, he and Adams have both scored in qualifying. There's no way of knowing that Scotland would even be going to the world cup if Hirst had been picked. There's nothing about his solitary Scotland goal in a friendly against Liechtenstein that demands a place in the side. Sure, he's scored at four different youth International levels. For England.

Still, he may come on in the World Cup as a sub and get a chance from the penalty spot. Does anyone who if Jack Clarke's dad played for England and himself had a dad that was Scottish? Might be a better bet.

I'm joking, but I genuinely do think that Scotland have a number of at least equally good options. If Hirst's upturn in form continues, he may be able to force himself into the mix, but I don't think his form screams 'pick me' at the moment. Plus, Clarke has just got Scotland to a world cup for the first time in George Hirst's lifetime. I think that's a pretty decent achievement, and he's earned the right to choose one decent enough championship striker over another.

Glorious sporting failure is the Scottish way at least when it comes to team games, although in the last few tournaments they haven't even hit those heights.

This from the Guardian made me laugh.

Scottish humour – and fatalism – means punters are already pondering World Cup defeat against Cape Verde or Jordan. You have to go back to 1990 for the last time Scotland won a game in the tournament.

EDIT: the last paragraph reminds me of the time when Wales lost to Western Samoa at rugby which led to the joke circulating in Wales. "Thank God we weren't playing the whole of Samoa".
