I guess this is a 'woe is me' post, but I am so sad about what AI is doing to all creative job roles. Be it copy editing, proof reading, songwriting, authors, journalists, etc.
All creative jobs are seemingly viewed as replaceable. The minute you remove humanity from creativity, you are giving in.
So, as a shameless plug, here's the last song my band released, nearly 18 months ago. It has just over 150 views. Pitiful. There are so many more creatives out there, who are decent at what they do, and have much to give, but will never get a look in, if AI is allowed to go unchecked. Feeling very sad for our industry, right now.
If I could double-uppy this, I would. As a professional editor and budding (but terrible) poet, I completely concur with your thoughts about the impact of AI on the sector. Will be listening to this, keep creating!

Hard agree with so much of this. I'm not a creative person, but love listening to music, supporting others creativity, do 2 radio shows, going to gigs etc etc.
The thing with AI 'creativity', is that it is all terrible derivative crap. You look at any AI image on social media (god knows there is enough of it) and you can immediately tell it is AI. Same (in fact worse) with AI music - it sounds EXACTLY like it has digested loads of original music and then created a vanilla version of it, without any soul/individual flair/personality.
I can imagine just how demoralising it must be for anyone trying to scrape a living from their art, or indeed anyone just trying to find an audience, however small or niche that audience may be.
FWIW re your song, I have a bit of a personal aversion to britpop, so probably not the right audience for it, but it's a nice hooky bit of indie pop for those that would go for it and should have had a much bigger audience than it has.

I think the AI genie is well out of the bottle. I keep seeing people say it's not very good or it's overhyped but I am using it more and more.
Genie out of the bottle was exactly the phrase that popped into my head too.
We humans tend to think we're so clever and we certainly enjoy the fruits of our invention. But we live on an essentially finite planet and within an essentially frozen (in relative timescale) biology and fragile psychology.
There's no way back from the good and bad consequences of rapidly advancing technology, because we can't evolve a self-regulating psychology within our human psyche that will enable us to limit what we do and rein in the consequences, no matter how logically obvious they are for almost everybody who cares to be honest with themselves. We want the toys and don't want to look at the credit card bill.
The dark consequences of our evolving inventiveness (souped up even more now by bringing the powers of our new AI toy into the game) might not be so bad if we had unlimited space to expand (or escape) into, but we don't.
Anyone who thinks regulations can solve or even mitigate anything in the ethereal world of effortlessly self-propagating binary and Moore's Law holding firm on GPUs, this former scientist of sorts and coder thinks is kidding themselves.
AI is a huge problem that many people seem unwilling or unable to think through. You're right about the creative industries being particularly badly hit. AI can knock out an album in minute where it takes months and months for an artist to do so. It'll be shit but then you look at the music people consume and that won't really matter that much. Same goes for visual art, films, books - AI will churn out more and more bland, derivative crap and enough people will lap it up that there'll be barely any room for creative people to carve out a living anymore.
It has massive implications in other areas. In academia, it's being used in research and academic publishing (though it's still relatively easy to spot because it's shit) but more problematically it's use is widespread among students. It discourages them to think for themselves and to engage with proper academic sources. It means they don't learn how to write or how to structure an argument. If you have markers who are too jaded or not skilled enough to spot the use of AI, someone could get themselves a 2:1 without ever having produced a bit of work themselves and without ever meaningfully engaging with or understanding the course material. That's not ideal if that person is then entering the workforce without key knowledge and skills.
That's before getting on to the massive environmental impact of dickheads turning themselves into action figures (anyone who has done this should burn in hell) or producing those slop cartoon infographics that are suddenly all over LinkedIn. The planet is already screwed and our solution seems to be to burn through resources at an even quicker rate by going all in on a technology that is likely to make us all poorer and more miserable in the long run.
I could rant more but my final thought is this. Look at the most vocal proponents of AI, take a good hard look at those who are its most vociferous supporters and those who are pushing it and pushing it and telling us to ignore any reasonable concerns raised about its implications. Are they really the kind of people you think have your best interests at heart?
I hear the argument that since AI only regurgitates what's already out there in a mediocre form, this means that genuine human creativity should always have a market if it's good enough.
Problem is, for genuine talents to develop themselves and get to that point they usually need a period of learning to do the mediocre stuff first. Whether you are a filmmaker, artist, author or musician, you need that time learning your trade and grinding out a living. AI slop will rob those opportunities from those on the up. Also, whilst we currently can usually spot if something is AI generated, it's only going to get smarter over time.
There are exciting things AI will be able to do that will genuinely help humanity out. But it's difficult not to worry that a lot of us are going to get left behind or replaced and not get to enjoy the benefits.
Fingers crossed though, eh? At least it can't play football. Yet.

It is still early days in AI, it is all vanilla and shades of grey at the moment and you can often tell the difference between something computer and human generated, but as it grows up and develops and those lines diminish, it's going to cause carnage. The intellectual property theft will skyrocket as effectively as AI isn't creative in its own right yet.

People should be on the streets over this kind of thing. We've become so cowed as a society that we just accept it as perfectly normal that a handful of people control so much wealth and wield so much power while the majority struggle to make ends meet. It's nuts. If you were designing a socio-economic structure from scratch that was intended to be sustainable and to meet everyone's basic human needs, it 100% would not be a system that not only promotes but is dependent upon this kind of gross inequality.
My local newspaper recently started using AI to generate sports previews; just a robotic rehash of stats sprinkled in with some words that often don’t really make sense. It’s ghastly and awful. We’re on a very slippery slope.
I feel your pain. My own mini-business of creating and managing websites isn;t going well. Clients are drying up and that could be a poorly economy, or my own ageing (who wants a 5o year old web designer) or it could be AI making it easier for the market I serve to sort themselves out.
Whatever the cause, I have £1800 in my various bank accounts (including savings) and outgoings of about 3 grand a month. I have a few small invoices out, so Christmas may yet be saved, but january is looking fcking bleak no matter what. No idea what to do really. Feel like a coal miner in the 80s!
