And im slowly reaching the conclusion that theres a large group of "supporters" who have simply decided that we are way worse than we actually are and wont be swayed regardless of the overall picture.

The narrative that we're "sh1t" (and ive read that many times) and certain players "simply arent good enough, is utterly ridiculous when we sit 3rd and are high scorers and low conceders.

Now before the inevitable pile on and downvotes from the usual, I dont think we are great, we are very inconsistent and have an infuriating habit of missing big chances and giving the opponents opportunities (yesterday an example), but some of our foitball is superb and individual moments of real skill are shown in every game.

I guess its the modern way of thinking, but its really tedious and is leading to a real negative vibe from the support, which actually hinders the team.

Not looking for an argument, just my personal thoughts.

It’s a bit flat in there isn’t it? by Cheltenham_Blue 21 Dec 11:18
All of this.

I'm eternally surprised that people around me are shocked that the performance levels are low.

**Que hurling abuse at Hirst for trying to let the ball run across him or at Walton for not launching the ball to 5'9" Azon**

Playing at PR must be pretty poor at the moment, people just expect us to roll every team over 6-0 with the players we have. Go and look at Burnley's results from last year up to Christmas, you know, Burnley that finished with a huge points total.

They weren't turning teams over at all by any stretch, they won most by the odd goal, and had an awful awful lot of 0-0 games, finished with 100 points.

I'll confidently predict we won't be getting anywhere near 100 points this season. We'd have to suddenly turn into world beaters ant that ain't gonna happen.

You're third paragraph is particularly interesting as it mentions individual skill and, at the moment, I feel that's where we are at the moment. When trying to break teams down we feel very reliant - and maybe the stats will show differently - on individual skill rather than team work. For me, the biggest concern is we can turn up and look like a bunch of strangers on the pitch, like the first half yesterday. It took Philogene's supreme effort to led to a corner from which we scored. Rotation cannot be blamed as McKenna, where possible, has stuck with a relatively settled line up. I think that is my biggest concern heading into the second half of the season; we don't appear to be a team for swathes of games and, from August to December, that has hurt us against sides who are organised and tough to break down.

Whilst I don't disagree with what youre saying, there have been a few really excellent team goals this season.

Yesterday involved 3 excellent contributions for the 2nd.

If we go up *one* whole place and finish the season in second and get promoted, which needs a 5 point swing over half a season, then this team and period will be lauded in a few years, like the other promotion ones.

We'll forget the duff performances and we'll have the memories of philogene filling a goal of the season compilation by himself, of Nunez and that whole pantomime with them, Egeli developing into a top class player, matusiwa becoming Cante. Just as we forgot all the close games when we got promoted last time.

But because we are in the thick of it, as still happened in the promotion season but again has been forgotten conveniently, people flap and moan.

All or nothing. Up and they become legends, stay down and it's a disgrace and a joke.

This is my major concern, too. Where is the connectivity in the “ team”? We look and feel like a squad of individuals by and large. And when we gone a goal down, there’s simply not that collective push. There’s no focal driver in the team… I can’t say we ever feel like a true “ team”…

This is not a criticism, it’s an observation, and the same feeling prevails at just about every game this season. I honestly,y don’t know how we are 3rd. We have the 2nd best scoring rate, and defensive record, yet it doesn’t FEEL that way. I’m at a loss as to why this is. I’m rarely coming away from games think , “ wow, what a game. And performance by us today”.

Is the CC just so weak, that even when fairing literally on only one cylinder, intermittently through games, has us placed 3rd…. I don’t even think Coventry are any great shakes, tbh. But they are a settled team of players over the last 4 years, and I think that’s why they are where they are, by and large.

This is an example of exactly what im on about. You (like many others) have decided we are poor, so will look for examples that back up your argument win, lose or draw.

Its absolutely now entrenched in a huge part of our fanbase and to me its utterly weird.

But maybe its me who's weird ?

It seems you can only be in one of two camps... its all rubbish or its all great.

Reality is that we sit very firmly between the two.

I think it comes down to the team not gaining fans trust yet they are doing ok but as you pointed out make mistakes and are inconsistent, which makes fans nervous and that sometimes shows with a frustrated emotional reaction.

The season we came 2nd playing fantastic football, got us promotion. Leicester didn’t have the same style of football as us but ultimately one the league by having better players and I think that’s something we need to realise too.

The one way we could have got promoted 2 years ago was to outplay teams as individually our players were not as good as some teams. This season we just need to create “ moments “ in the game ( which has resulted in us being a lot less fluid ).

I’m neither for or against either the above is just an observation I’ve made and how I see it. I am confident Ipswich will go up this season, even without hitting entertaining heights.

We're 5 points behind where Burnley were at the same stage.

Were we absolutely bang on 150 percent behind everything to do with the team in those promotion campaigns? It seems like many need an automatic kinship with every player alongside a team playing amazingly, winning and top of league. I think people are comparing the absolute finished conclusion after knowing what happened to what happens during every season, good, bad and ugly.

An interesting mention of Leicester - and now you mention it yes, I do remember their fans being really fed up with the manager (whoever it was).

The weight of expectation is sitting heavy on our shoulders. We were the plucky underdog in 23-24, no expectations, just a wonderful team defying the odds in the most sensational way. (Seriously, just look at the stats, it was fking insane what that group achieved)

It’s not fair to judge the squads but it’s human nature to look back and compare and contrast. Whereas before we spent 500k here or 700k there, now we’ve spent 12miilion here and 18million there. Now, we’ve earned the right to spend the money, but with it comes expectations. It’s not fair but it’s reality.

I don’t think it’s helpful to get too bogged down in hurt feelings or worry too much about what other fans think, do, or say.

Zoom out for the bigger view and it’s stunning to think how much has changed in five years. Stadium looking magnificent, no longer does the team have to play on a Sunday league pitch, new multi-million training facility being built. 29k average crowd in division 2, top six at least looking very achievable. The Lambert/Evans disaster show seems a lifetime ago. COYB.

There were plenty of people wetting the bed around this time two years ago when we had our Christmas/Early January wobble. A venn diagram of people who are doing it now has quite a broad overlap.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
