Subliminally I had buried any thoughts of cricket having already written us off. That is in deed something. I'm not sure what.

I’m a London based Town fan on holiday in Melbourne. Had tickets for day 3 but managed to get tickets for days 1 & 2 whilst here. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and result with many happy Brits in the city. Back next week in time for the Pompey match - if I can get a ticket!!

Glad to hear it. Still expect there were many with day 3 and 4 tickets not as pleased as yourself. No test pitch should play like that so that a result in 2 days is likely. It's been roundly criticised by ex-players from both sides. SB

Saw 20 wickets had fallen on the first day and thought typical England to bowl them out for 150 only to concede a first innings lead of 40 odd. Beaten the Aussies inside two days to prevent their series whitewash. I bet they are pretty annoyed with that! Well done, England - clearly I was wrong to say they should have come home after the second test.

Changes still need to be made IMO. What worries me if we win the last Test in Sydney too - 3-2 it was a close series!! Where in reality we had periods during the first three Teat without dominating a day’s play. The Aussies have been the consistently better side in all facets of the game. [Post edited 27 Dec 11:15]

Is it the pitch, the teams or both? Whilst we have been woeful, Australia haven't been that great either.

It's definitely the pitch, Vaughan and McGrath were both scathing of it on day one, McGrath though it was ridiculous they left 10mm of grass on it. There is a real issues with "drop-in" pitches, they probably should be using something more settled for Ashes tests and certainly cutting the grass shorter. For context, there have only been 27 tests finish within 2 days in the 2615 on record. SB

They have been using drop-in pitches at the MCG since 1996. This didn't seem a good one and I suppose the issue is the inconsistency of drop-in pitches.

If Australia had got another 70 runs they'd have won that imo. Swann said it about 2010/11, Mitchell Johnson was unplayable if he only bowled 10 overs and then rested for a day and a half, but if he was out there bowling all day and then back bowling so quickly again it was much easier to face Starc is the same and carrying the bowling without the other two main bowlers Cummings and Hazlewood, three if you count Lyon though spin wouldnt have worked here, and its no real surprise the guy who hasn't bowled at all in this series suddenly looks world beating.

Fair point but not deep in pitches with 10mm grass which could easily be trimmed. McGrath wasn't happy with the pitch or grass length. SB [Post edited 27 Dec 21:20]
