What year did the upper tier of the SBR open? 22:31 - Jan 15 with 1608 viewsITFC_Forever

Quiz question at the ITFC quiz this evening mate was at, apparently the quizmaster said 2001.

I’d put my life on it being the start of the 2002-03 season.

The Inter game was December 2001, and the upper tier wasn’t even built then. The lower tier had only opened on a restricted basis shortly before.

Edit; actually the Inter home game was November 2001, but th point still stands, the upper tier wasn’t even built when that game was played.

Even though I wasn’t at the quiz, this is annoying me more than it should.

Or it was a lazy google, as the ITFC wiki page says North Stand was rebuilt in 2001.

which is technically correct up to a point.

but for instance there werent any seats up there till Feb 2002. the roof wasnt on till end of March 2002. you couldnt get upper tier tickets till 2002/03

south stand opened formally/officialy for the Helsingborg game in 2001 by UEFA head at the time Lennart Johansson, when the lower north was still closed.

(top tip there are some good shots of the progress from the West Ham game in 2001)

but the lower tier was open in time for the Milan game.

Early 90s - summer of 92 - was when seats went in the North. Upper tier would have been sometime in 2002. Come to think of it, was there any kind of grand opening event for it?

Technically correct in that the North Stand was rebuilt, but not in terms of answering the question of when the upper tier opened.

The Milan game was 2001. The lower north was partially open but the upper wasn’t finished until 2002.

Yes, with you and ITFC_Forever on this one. We were back in the lower North, after the South Upper hiatus, for Newcastle and Arsenal at the end of 2001 but the upper tier was nowhere near done then.

Upper North was open for the last 2 or 3 home games of the 2001/2 season so would have been calendar year 2002

Can't remember if a home prior to this had the upper tier in any sort of operation.

Not quite right as the upper tier was operational - even if not completely but almost - for the final few games of 2001/02.

But was the question North Stand or SBR ? as you could pedantically say the SBR only opened when Lady Elsie officially named the stand in 2009 before the Newcastle game...

Lol well i wasn't going for the exact dates, simply proving it wasn't 2001.

A simple check of attendances would have actually shown it was the Aston Villa game 23 March 2002, week before Chelsea where we went from the 24000/25000 attendances we'd had from December 2001 onwards to 28053. And finished against Man Utd with 28433

A worthy correction imo rather than pedantry. It confirms the season was 01/02 and not 02/03, as thought at the beginning of the thread. The Villa attendance was 25,247, so believe Fife has it spot on and the correct fixture was Chelsea, 01/04/02, our third last (league) game of that season. I don't remember any of that period so thanks to posters for imparting their knowledge.

Exactly.

9th Feb vs Liverpool - 25,608
2nd Mar vs Southampton - 25,440
23rd Mar vs Aston Villa - 25,247
1st Apr vs Chelsea - 28,053
24th Apr vs Middlesbrough - 25,979
27th Apr vs Man Utd - 28,433

Very true.

As the OP, I stand corrected that it wasn't the start of the following season.

But the quizmaster (who should know better) was also wrong with 2001.

No, everyone does not get one point. Carpet munchers don't get a point, Stephen Hawkin's football boots don't get a point. I had to go home to get a book to prove it.
They went, 'Oh, yeah, you're right. Well done. You've won. Sorry'.

no apologies necessary.
Let's get on with the quiz.

There were definitely seats up there in 2001, albeit not available for purchase and may not have been the entire tier.

A family member worked there which allowed us to watch the 2nd half of the Sunderland 5-0 game up there, just after Christmas if memory serves me right.
