What a difference a month makes 13:06 - Jan 19 with 1479 viewsDubtractor

About a month ago there were several posts on here lamenting the lack of connection between the current squad and the fanbase, at its most daft suggesting that the squad just weren't that likeable.

Now we're seeing player of the year discussion based entirely around new players, alive in for Furlong's application of the dark arts, and a general feel good factor about the team.

Its almost as though all that really matters is winning games......

The thing is, that 23/24 season was insane, we'll never see anything like that again, and I think people (not you) need to park that and just enjoy this season in its own right.

Absolutely. 23/24 was a magical season and I'm not sure anything could compete with it. I'm excited for the remainder of this season however. Realistically we could've scored 8 on Saturday, still without hitting our absolute best. It won't be long until we give a team a real pummelling.

But it's a low bar. And it went pretty flat for much of the second. It's really annoying. Some fans even stare when me or one of my cronies yells "come on Town" or whatever.

I thought it was one of the better ones on Saturday though, especially for a 12:30.

Shame some people can’t even join in with clapping along to a song most of the time though!

And yet when the next loss comes along the reaction will be silly once again.

Are you really suggesting we *won't* go unbeaten for the remainder of the season?

So negative, honestly!

Discussion a couple of us had last week.

When we go up... Do you think there would be many of the squad out in the town after the game to celebrate with fans in the same way they did from Championship to PL last time?

And was pleasantly surprised in the first half.

I know a) it's the same at most clubs b) Blue Action are making an effort at least and c) there's an issue with the Lower North old timers and genrally with the placement of fans who want to sing and chant (ref again BA who'd be better off up near the away end or middle of LN) but man our fanbase is a bit lame.

My guess would be probably not, just as I doubt that the celebration of promotion will be as big from the fans this time around (if it happens). Last time it was a huge relief following 22 years of failure and slow decline. It was also the career peak for the majority of the squad, many of whom probably never thought they would reach the top flight.

This season is totally different, we're favourites to go up, and the majority of the squad will feel that they should be playing in the premier league. It will be far more job done than dream come true.

Nunez fisting technique has improved, but still a bit wishy washy.

I reckon Kipre would deliver a top tier fist, perhaps he doesn't want to embarrass his team mates?

As posted on an earlier thread, he seemed to almost lose his balance after the last fisting.

It's quite odd that so many of our players cant do a proper fist pump. They look a bit like they're casting out a line half the time.

Second half was pretty poor though in comparison, at least until about 75th minute, so it's not entirely surprising. I do think it cuts both ways (to at least some extent).

And that's the same at most grounds. But the team weren't playing with no effort, and for me I'd rather get some atmosphere going simply because that's what going to the game is about. For me, I say.

I think a lot of fans are a) entitled and b) lame ass zombies.

I do still think there is something missing.

I was in SAR Upper Saturday rather than my usual spot in A Block & the post match “celebrations” felt very subdued still, things like Kipre not wanting to do the fist bump etc.

I think it’s that everything this time around feels a bit more routine & we’re not getting the thrill of the 3-2, 4-3 games we had in 23/24. That & the sense of expectation that is now upon us…

Yeah, deffo something missing. I put it down to after seeing us win a huge percentage of games for 2 season running,to a really dismal post christmas run of form at Portman Road last season and a slow, sticky start to this season....almost still a little bit of nerves and uneasiness?

There is still a weird disconnect between reality and social media though. We could make it seven home wins in a row tomorrow and we are the second top scorers in the division with the second best defence, but the panic over not signing anyone yet has to be seen to be believed.

And it would be understandable in the Evans era, but since Gamechanger came in we've strengthened every window.

There’s that, and also the consistency of team selection has helped. Not knowing who was our first choice right back, or number 10 for example didn’t help. The first team picks itself now and therefore there’s more familiarity.

Nunez as an example was largely a squad player at the start of the season and looked average at best. He’s now one of the first names on the teamsheet and one of the best creative players in the league. So I agree winning is a big part of it but also players being there week in week out and turning in performances has helped l!

Since arguably our 3 POTS contenders so far are all new it’s almost as if we need to give McK a bit of time coaching before we see the best of them.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Given how long it took to get signings up to speed I would suggest it has to be a very special signing (expected PL starter if/when we go up). Therefore I suspect we may blank this window - but would suspect / hope the spadework is being put into place for the summer.

There was a very weird reaction to losing at Leicester in particular, not that we played particularly well but we didn't play particularly badly either. A bit of sloppiness on the ball and two very good finishes before more sloppiness on the ball.

And then similar to only beating Sheffield Wednesday by a couple of goals, again not a brilliant performance but a pretty comfortable one Obviously drama queens are going to drama but some people were a bit over the top at that time.

I do think people misremember 2023-24, forget the dreadful goals we gave away (Blackburn and Preston at home for example) or those games where we were second best for much of it, WBA away, both Leicester games and 'throwing promotion away' after the defeats at Cardiff and Norwich.

Yes, there were magnificent highs in that season but the bumpier bits seem to have been forgotten, even for matches we ultimately won (Bristol City and Southampton at home in particular). A similar thing happened in 2001-02, not entitlement exactly but a bit too much expectation that we just have to turn up to won games. Not all of that in the stands, there's still a bit on the pitch at times where we take it a bit too easy.

Agreed, but there was still loads heading for the exits and not staying to give the players a clap and a cheer.

TBF, for those who live outside of Ipswich, it can take nigh on an hour to get anywhere near the A14 and you really don't want to loiter to get the train heading back towards Cambridge. Personally, I stay until the players have gone around the pitch but I can understand why people slope off. Chuff knows what it'll be like when we expand to 40,000 because the town can't cope now.

Time to reinstate the Ipswich underground, to allow for easier movement to the suburbs without clogging the roads up.
