Is there a world where we don't sign a striker... 19:48 - Jan 19 with 1957 viewsvilanovablue

... this window? We've a goal difference of +20 which only 5 other clubs in the league have. Our defence is patently excellent. Might we look elsewhere this window? Frankly I think we need one but don't want to just get a body. January is a crap time to find a striker.

There is absolutely a world where we dont sign a striker.

We have three in our squad currently. If and buts but a lot has to happen including one of those loans being culled and a striker of interest being 1 found, 2 available, 3 achievable.

This is why you look for goals from other places, zero contribution from midfield. Little contribution from the right side. Assists not goals from the 10.

Lots of opportunity to finds goals orher than via a striker.

Szmodics is back also, we seemed to play Azon behind him also which was interesting to see

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

The most important thing is that if we get another striker in he is better than Hirst and that is going to be extremely difficult to attain. I never saw Bamford as that player.
I believe if promoted we have to buy Akpom for 7 million. Azon's position is different in that we can buy, but no obligation.
Getting Bamford in would have meant if you exclude Azon three strikers none of whom are prolific and a 32 year old on an 18 month contract who given Leeds don't want him means they don't see him as good enough.
You could I suppose say that he may have made the difference between staying in the Championship or getting promoted. But in that I am far from sure. It's not like a Kieffer Moore situation and in my opinion we would need possibly another six players to stay in the Premier League if promoted.

I do enjoy Hirst, I’ve said that already and for how we play, he’s the best we’ve got. That doesn’t mean he’s above discussion, or that we shouldn’t be looking to improve if the opportunity’s there.

I get that January’s hard and recruitment isn’t FM (never played it though), but when we say it’s difficult, what are we actually missing? Money? No. A club on an attractive trajectory? Hopefully not. So it does come back to the recruitment team. Not as a dig, just logically.

So are we genuinely saying there isn’t a centre forward out there who could improve us, even a bit to get us over the line? We’ve got a lot of the pieces in place now and that’s exactly why strengthening from a position of strength makes sense to me. The idea that we don’t need anything up top just feels daft. We do.

I think you're missing one important impediment. Availability. If we're going to get another No 9 then ideally they need to do everything Hirst does well and a bit more. Who's that going to be? Someone at the right level, who can come in and make an immediate difference AND their club is willing to let them go (without us being taken to the cleaners on price).

Lots of clubs are on the lookout for that killer No 9, but few are moving in the mid-season window. Maybe we pick someone up at the end of the window, once the dominoes start falling in the PL, but I don't feel we desperately need someone to get us over the line this season.

Now, the summer is completely different, if we get prompted - but then we'll be looking a level above where we are right now.

I think we should stick with what we have, unless a striker who is PL ready, becomes available at the right price. I honestly think we will finish top 2 with the current squad.
The money needs to be spent in the closed season and that's where Ashton and KM will need to earn their stripes.

I'm 95% sure we will sign a striker, its clear watching every game that we lack anyone with proper ability as a 9. Jan is hard time to get one in yes but dominos will start falling.

This has probably already been posted elsewhere but there's a good article on this subject by Jack Saunders posted on Blue Monday:-

I think we are saying finding someone who isn't likely to need time to adapt, is available, interested in the move and won't immediately be surplus to required if we are promoted must be almost impossible.

A player that good, would probably think the move would be available in the summer once we find out what league we are playing next season.
