Thats been a creeper. I disnt expect that when we went all out looking for forwards ans strikers in the summer nor how we started the season, but credit to the squad for working though and really tightening things up in this way. Keep it up! | |

If anything demonstrates McKenna's evolution as a coach it is how the team is now playing.
I know we all loved the gung-ho outscore the opposition ride that took us from League 1 to the Prem, but it never set us up for long term success, as that is always built on a solid backbone to a team and well organised defence that does not concede regularly.
I think this became most apparent last season with the amount of points we dropped from winning or drawing positions. KM has gone back to the drawing board and tweaked the personel, formation and approach which while it took several months to really settle down is now delivering the points.
The football may not be as exciting but personally I am enjoying the way we play, the slow patient build up, the control we are demonstrating, the less panic and chaos, and I know my heart is better off in the 75th minute onwards at the moment versus how it felt nearly every game in 23-24. i'd think it'd be very similar, and that's not a dig at walton, both are very capable championship goalkeepers.

Haji Wright and Ellis Simms have missed 20 big chances between them, Haaland has missed 20 by himself. Not convinced that's the most useful stat going.
Shot conversion rate is maybe a better metric. Hirst on 16% which is the same as Haji Wright. Azon down at 5% (although gets off as many shots per 90 as anyone in the league) - some of that down to poor finishing and some down to seeming to come up against a worldie save once per match.
Ellis Simms is quite impressive - converting around 21% of his shots and gets off the most per 90 in the league but has only played the equivalent of 11 full matches. | |
