The trickiest bit of dry january 12:01 - Jan 22 with 743 viewsredrickstuhaart

(and indeed, eat feck all with a view to losing significant weight January) is when we are getting towards the last week, and you have done something tough for which it feels like you deserve a reward.

I mean- 22 days is pretty good. And beer is full of grains, which are good for you. And a couple really isnt going to hurt when you have done some hard physical work on your day off. Is it?

I find the tricky thing about abstaining from anything for a period of time is the mental bit. If I'm not allowed something it becomes much more of a 'thing', and I think about it far more. I did dry Jan previously and it felt like I was annoyed every day that I couldn't have a beer, even though in reality I wouldn't have had any ordinarily on 80% of the days anyway. This year I'm not doing it, but I've probably only had about 8 alcoholic drinks this month in total without even being conscious of it.

i do demi-sec january. it's much more civilised.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I don't get why people pick JANUARY to stop doing things they enjoy. It's the worst and longest month for that sort of thing.

Because its a very obvious and clear starting point, which is very difficult to put off by saying "oh next month" and because it follows a period of intense excess for many, by the end of which one feels ready for a break from it all anyway.

Works for me.

Would you rather sit outside with a beer in the rain in January or in the sun in June?

I quite like sitting by a nice warm fire with a beer in January and sitting outside with a nice cold sprite in June, if that helps.

Keep it up buh. I'm doing it again this year and the time's flying by. I've had no cravings and don't miss it at all. There's a couple of times I've thought about opening a can and had to catch myself, which shows for me it's just about habits. Last year I struggled and lapsed a couple of times, but this year has been a breeze. I'm thinking of pushing it out further to see if it helps me get fitter (I'm tying it in with getting back to a regular fitness/training routine).

I also find abstaining from alcohol easier in the summer months compared to the winter. There's so much more to do to keep you happy / busy in summer.

It's tough. I always do January to April but this year have changed to allowing myself a drink on special occasions and watching the Six Nations (but not at home). I've hated being the miserable sad sack at a party sitting sober in the corner. Now I'm just the drunk sad sack sitting in the corner.

It can sometimes be a struggle, but I have been doing dry "January" for around 4,400 days now . . .
