PLEASE let this happen - re. Andy Burnham 15:15 - Jan 22 with 2125 viewsgtsb1966

The one person who can stop Farage and wipe that smug grin off his face.

I'm not sure Farage has much of a foothold currently in Gorton and Denton, and if you're expecting a leadership challenge V Starmer, this is highly unlikely to happen before the next election. Labour rules make this quite difficult, unlike Tory rules where they are almost encouraged to stab the incumbent in the back every 6 months.

This line from the article is rather interesting:

"One senior source told the BBC that Gwynne had reached agreement on a pension on Thursday – which would allow him to retire as an MP on medical grounds."

I wasn't aware that being persona non grata thanks to some fairly reprehensible conduct was an accepted ground for medical retirement.

I'll have to start harassing some of my female colleagues, and use that as grounds to retire thirty-five years early.

This is interesting from Sam Coates.

"Could Andy Burnham be on the brink of becoming a member of the Parliament? Well he faces a BIG hurdle. There is a new rule - introduced in the 2026 Labour about Mayors wanting to become MP.

It says: “Directly Elected Mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners must seek the express permission of the NEC/SEC/WEC (as applicable) before seeking nomination as Labour candidates for the Westminster Parliament. The NEC/SEC/WEC’s decision shall be final”

Andy Burnham would have to stand down as Metro Mayor of Manchester, triggering an election for that post which Labour is not guaranteed to win and will cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.

So these are the grounds that could be used to block Burnham by the NEC.
I’m told Morgan McSweeny thinks he’s got the NEC sewn up to block Burnham. But you never quite know. If Burnham is granted permission to apply for the seat, the NEC does a long and a shortlist.

The long list over email, then the shortlisting is done by a panel. The panel has 3 members of the NEC, one member of the board and a local constituency rep. The panel is chosen by the office of the general secretary, Hollie Ridley, who is close to Morgan, decides the panel.

So it’s far from clear he wins this.

Assuming that Gwynne is willing to wait/assist, could Burnham resign as Mayor, and then throw his hat into the ring for Gwynne's seat once Gwynne resigns, in order to circumvent the involvement of the NEC/SEC/WEC?

35 years, yeah right. The retirement age will be 90 by the time you’re done.

You are thinking about this all wrong.

Benters, would you stop hating Labour, and turn away from Nige, if Burnham was in charge?

I also think that people expecting Burnham to be the Messiah are going to very disappointed.

Would be hilarious if Zack Polanski stood in the byelection and beat Burnham.

edit. Rumours that the NEC will make it an all-BAME shortlist.

I don't think it will make any difference

The right have total control of the party and from recollection were able to ensure that only one candidate from the left was selected as a new candidate at the last election, that person being subsequently deselected a month or so before the election.

This was something Michael Crick criticised at the time and with the right in control of the NEC, they will no doubt be able to ensure that Burnham gets nowhere near the selection process.

The only thing I think could stop this would be some sort of political pressure perhaps from members of the Parliamentary party.

Indeed, the timing of Gwynne's retirement is perhaps curious because I believe the pressure for Burnham would be strengthened after the May elections, if as expected they go badly.

Maybe the Starmer loyalists are looking at this from the wrong end. Yes, he's a potential rival - but also he's a relatively charismatic reinforcement (with a track record of success) for a government which has struggled to get its positive messaging across to the public.

Although his 'track record' includes being the only Health Secretary in history to privatise a National Health Service hospital.

I was thinking more recently in Manchester, where he seems to be fairly well regarded.

His stint as Health Secretary was quite brief, in the dying months of the Brown government over 15 years ago.

I can vouch for his charisma because he certainly had an aura when came on stage during a hustings I was at during the 2015 leadership campaign.

Indeed, it was his ability to cut through that made me vote for him.

That's once. Burnham stood and lost twice. Plus Truss only lasted a few weeks so the circumstances are entirely different.

Look we have a competent and decent Prime Minister in Starmer who is running the country n very difficult circumstances, both at home and abroad. Labour have a massive majority and another 3 years in power. Why are people within the Labour party waning to put all that at risk?

I do wonder if the hatred of Starmer is mainly down to Rachel Reeves and her budgets. My hope is that we're going uphill in the first half of their term and the last two years will be much better having put us on a better financial footing to reel back on some of the more controversial policies. If you've a big majority you can get away with it in the first half. They'll get hit in May though, that's for certain. That always happens anyway doesn't it?

U-turns are embarrassing but I'd prefer politicians put their hands up and tweak/remove policies that aren't going to work.

Burnham feels like that injured football player that is better in people's minds when he's not playing. Certainly has much better charisma and that's what people want. Does seem to have done a good job in Manchester.

If you liked my post, please take the time to upvote it. It's very much appreciated.

Being Mayor is an easier gig than being PM. Take credit for the good stuff. Blame the government for the bad stuff. Boris Johnson made his career on the back of it.

By-elections are notoriously difficult for any government, you invariably get a protest vote.

The other parties like Lib-Dem, Greens will use the arguement with the local public, he will be like Farage in Clacton, he's never going to be interested in you/local issues he's only using you as a stepping stone.

Its a danger for Burnham as he would have to give up the Manchester mayor job and if he didn't win the by-election that is him completely out of politics.

He'll never get there. I can't see him resigning from being Mayor, he'd never get past the selecting committee and even if he did, it's no guarantee he'd win that seat.
