I'm not sure Farage has much of a foothold currently in Gorton and Denton, and if you're expecting a leadership challenge V Starmer, this is highly unlikely to happen before the next election. Labour rules make this quite difficult, unlike Tory rules where they are almost encouraged to stab the incumbent in the back every 6 months. |  |

I wasn't aware that being persona non grata thanks to some fairly reprehensible conduct was an accepted ground for medical retirement.
I'll have to start harassing some of my female colleagues, and use that as grounds to retire thirty-five years early. |  |

It says: “Directly Elected Mayors and Police and Crime Commissioners must seek the express permission of the NEC/SEC/WEC (as applicable) before seeking nomination as Labour candidates for the Westminster Parliament. The NEC/SEC/WEC’s decision shall be final”
Andy Burnham would have to stand down as Metro Mayor of Manchester, triggering an election for that post which Labour is not guaranteed to win and will cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.
So these are the grounds that could be used to block Burnham by the NEC.
I’m told Morgan McSweeny thinks he’s got the NEC sewn up to block Burnham. But you never quite know. If Burnham is granted permission to apply for the seat, the NEC does a long and a shortlist.

I don't think it will make any difference
The right have total control of the party and from recollection were able to ensure that only one candidate from the left was selected as a new candidate at the last election, that person being subsequently deselected a month or so before the election.
This was something Michael Crick criticised at the time and with the right in control of the NEC, they will no doubt be able to ensure that Burnham gets nowhere near the selection process.
The only thing I think could stop this would be some sort of political pressure perhaps from members of the Parliamentary party.
Indeed, the timing of Gwynne's retirement is perhaps curious because I believe the pressure for Burnham would be strengthened after the May elections, if as expected they go badly. [Post edited 22 Jan 21:18]

I do wonder if the hatred of Starmer is mainly down to Rachel Reeves and her budgets. My hope is that we're going uphill in the first half of their term and the last two years will be much better having put us on a better financial footing to reel back on some of the more controversial policies. If you've a big majority you can get away with it in the first half. They'll get hit in May though, that's for certain. That always happens anyway doesn't it?

By-elections are notoriously difficult for any government, you invariably get a protest vote.
The other parties like Lib-Dem, Greens will use the arguement with the local public, he will be like Farage in Clacton, he's never going to be interested in you/local issues he's only using you as a stepping stone.
Its a danger for Burnham as he would have to give up the Manchester mayor job and if he didn't win the by-election that is him completely out of politics. |  | | |
