I'm thinking of a nice trip to Bruges on the Eurostar 21:08 - Jan 24 with 708 viewsredrickstuhaart

About £40. Great.

But getting to London, a shorter journey, will cost me well over £100 return....

That's not a bad deal at all.

How far in advance are you booking, and what sort of day/time is it?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Im looking at March. but 160 plus to get to London, from a shorter distance than London to Bruges makes flights look more attractive.

Lunacy.

Can you not drive to Ashford & park? Or do trains not stop there anymore?

No idea.

But our trains are a ripoff unfortunately.

In answer to my own question, it seems they ceased stopping at Ashford in 2020. Which is a shame.

Bruges well worth a visit. Not sure if any of these options work out for you:

Most expensive rail fares in Europe. Makes you proud, doesn’t it?

TBF it is the best rail service in Europe though.
Isn't it?
It must be. Surely?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Supposed to be reinstating Ashford as a Eurostar stop shortly.

But back to the op, train fares in this country seem designed to motivate you back into the car. Prices are outrageous.

Agreed - had our first wedding anniversary there back in 2023.

Can highly recommend a boat trip, the beer experience, and the Friets museum. Chocolate museum is worth a visit too, if you don't mind it glossing over the whole 'Belgium in Africa' side of things (you're expected to believe that chocolate just magically arrived in Belgium...).

If going to Bruges i would consider staying in Blankenberg, we live 2 hours from Bruges and visit maybe 3 or 4 times a year but we always stay in blankenburg ,hotel prices are a lot cheaper than bruges, and it has the longest coastal tram , one ticket you can visit Knokke in holland or going the other way into France, train froom Blankenberg 10 minutes to Bruges, nothing better than strolling the beach promenade and having a few beers in Blankenberg.
