Feeling pretty bloody depressed about the state of the world right now 11:37 - Jan 25 with 1848 viewsDubtractor

Seems like it is bad news whichever way you look - Ukraine, Iran, Palestine, USA and loads more that don't dominate the news cycle in the same way.

I think I'm possibly even more depressed by the direction of travel in this country too - seems loads would love the influence of people like Trump and Musk to be more prominent here. The idea of a Reform government genuinely horrifies me.

Anyone got any positive news stories to share to cheer this miserable sod up a bit?

I have less than a year until retirement. I'm seriously considering moving to a mountain village in southern Europe somewhere. The world has changed so drastically in recent years and I don't like it. I just feel we're seriously close to a major war, be that civil war in the US or world war 3 because of American or Russian aggression. It's all getting really scary.

I'm sorry you feel that way but personally I don't think things are that bad.

Thanks but I'm sure similar was said in 1939.

My dad told me about the Cuban missile crisis and how everyone thought we would have a nuclear war. His father was a Desert Rat who fought against Rommel in Libya and Egypt.

Our generation have a had a more sheltered upbringing and seem to overreact somewhat.

I disagree. The world (in this corner of it) feels more dangerous now than at any point since the iron curtain came down and the Cold War thawed.

There are peaks and troughs and always have been.

Regarding dubbers op. I’ve chosen to more or less disengage with the news over the past two or three years. I’m definitely less informed but I’m not overly bothered. I’m wallowing in my ignorance and fckwittery.

I could get religious, but I won't. Not on this forum, anyway. I gain a lot of comfort from scripture, about the state of the world and the future, but it is not for everyone. By all means, DM me if you want to, but I will not be drawn into a religious discussion on here, as it never ends well and I know there are a lot of people who are very anti religion who regularly post.

So, I'm here to chat to you privately, if you feel that would help you, but I'm not about to preach at anyone. X

Not sure there’s much in terms of good news as such. Everything is fecked. However the amazing parts of humanity are still there. There’s huge numbers of amazing people doing great things, whether in science, medicine, art, music etc. There is also the sign of resistance starting to form against all this evil. Will it be enough? Who knows?

I’m torn between Zen - ā€œcan’t change what I don’t have the power to changeā€ and anger ā€œget angry and make those fockers changeā€. It’s a hard balancing act but I know I won’t *really* fight until I have no choice. And that’s what these c-units rely on. Yea, so I guess that’s a longwinded way of saying I feel the same.

We’ve added another 87 years of carbon emissions since then!

That is certainly true, but the focus of my discussion with Noggin was on the possibility of world war.

Or civil war in the US, which Trump seems to be encouraging.

I know you mentioned that at the outset but didn't think the 1939 parallel was relevant to that.

Happy to disagree with you on that, but my feeling is that the war in Ukraine (however tragic) has proved that Russia doesn't have the military capability that one might have expected, and presumably that Putin expected.

Indeed if such a thing is to occur, even if the physical conflict was solely kept within US borders, the impact on the global economy would be devastating. If we think Russia in Ukraine was bad for inflation rates and energy / commodity prices, well you 'aint seen nothing yet in this scenario. Dread to think what it would do to my pension fund, and those of millions of others. So bad news even before you even get to the problem that other bad actors in the world currently kept in check would take advantage of the US being 'distracted.'

I completely agree. There’s so much overreaction. The way Trump has only just started dismantling democracy and shifting towards totalitarianism makes last year and this much more like 1933/34.

Don't suppose you (or anyone else here) know a reputable but reasonably priced bunker construction firm?

Probs doesn't need to be at the spec to survive a direct multiple-megaton hit, but good enough that I can hide away for 3 years with my own air, food and water supply whilst my neighbours eat each other to survive.

Thanks in advance!
