Assuming Dan Neil signs, I make it that we have 27 in the squad including Conor Townsend, Elkan Baggott and Ashley Young. Anyone know if Conor has been registered? I seem to remember his injury was to the end of the season. Presumably now we are signing Dan Neil, we could de-register Young. If Elkan goes on loan, OR if we were to sell or loan out SS, or send Chuba back to Ajax, we could then make the space for a centre forward.
Personally, I still think a centre forward is coming, but it will be in the last 24 hours of the window, a PL player who isn't getting much game time.

My guess would be for Johnson to be the one who leaves. Barring cup games, he's fallen well down the pecking order at RB. Only had a couple of very late sub appearances since early November. Baggott is bench cover at CB (especially if Greaves has to replace Davis on occasion) and will get game time in the Cup.

Alternatively, with Mehmeti in, it could be Szmodics or Akpom, but I'd have thought that less likely (McKenna likes his attackers). Plus terminating Akpom's loan could be awkward.

Little point in not registering Young, he's only here until the end of the season and is a useful utility player covering several positions.

Yes, Young's injury sounded like it's not a quick one. We will be short at full back, so my expectation would be we keep Johnson and de-register Young. He seems to make as much contribution in the dressing room as he does on the pitch (that's meant to be positive btw), so that can continue. I really like Baggott, and hope that the FA Cup will be a bit of a launchpad for him, but he needs game time here or elsewhere.

you can play in the cups i believe, generally we only do it if there's no chance of the player being fit (as with burns and ogbene last january)

edit... going back a bit further, kenlock wasn't registered, and was limited to pizza cup games iirc

Can we take another loan though if it’s a PL player? We already have 5. Unless Akpom returns of course but feels unlikely we have that option to me given we have a £7m obligation if we go up and can’t imagine there is a queue of other clubs for him right now.

That makes sense if there is no chance of playing. Presume contract to be at club and paid is not same as being registered to play for them.
