That's ridiculous, someone could have been seriously hurt. If he's against the scheme he could have just used a cricket bat on the camera.

The scheme itself has been successful at achieving it's aims:

- Roadside nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels, a toxic gas that exacerbates asthma, impedes lung development and raises the risk of lung cancer, have decreased by 27% across London since Ulez was introduced in 2019.

- Small-particle emissions (PM2.5) from vehicle exhausts were 31% lower in outer London in 2024 than they would have been had Ulez not been expanded in 2023.

- Air quality has improved at 99% of monitoring sites across London since 2019.

The entire ULEZ movement has it's roots online, Facebook rabbit holes that have a ready audience post-covid.

In a prior era that bloke probably grumbles to his mates down the pub.

If there’s anything that sums up the stupidity of the modern UK public, it’s this. Verified reductions in respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, improvements in children’s lung development, reduced cardiovascular disease rates since its introduction, reduced sick leave in the area of the scheme, reports of lower stress, anxiety and improved mental health.

Yet some numpties are led into believing these are bad things.

It’s the same over here in Wales with the new 20 mph urban speed limits; a drop in collisions by ~20%, 25% fewer casualties and ~100 lives saved. Yet that’s supposedly a bad thing too.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

On a similar note, it will be interesting to see the results in the future in Manchester, they have taken a completely different route on the same problem, affordable public transport to make it cheaper and easier to use public transport. Carrot rather than stick approach, the Bea bus network combined with the trams seem very good when I use them. Whereas the bus service in Suffolk is being cut, reduced service and frequent unannounced cancellations make it difficult to use.

Achieved its aims ? I think you need to speak to London cabbies and people who have to enter the capital to get a true reflection of what they think about Citizen Khan and his ULEZ scheme.
Whilst he swans about spending money on flying himself and his staff on a jolly ordinary people are being prevented from doing their day to day jobs.

According to the second bit of footage in the video in that BBC report that explosion happened at 6.15pm on a Wednesday on what looks like a reasonably busy road.

What an absolute bell that bloke is.

Perhaps you're right. I'm about a decade younger than that man and don't use any social media, so my gripes are still fomented over a pint.

You (as in 'one') always assume other people are like you, but perhaps I'm an exception having practically no social media presence.

It has achieved it's aims, it's vastly improved the air quality in the capital.

Why should people who don't live in the capital but travel in like you've highlighted be allowed to pollute the air for those that do actually live there? That's an incredibly entitled view in my opinion. Should I come and sit outside your house and leave my polluting car idling all day?

It's you who has got this all wrong, not Khan.

I would also point out that over 60% of black cabs are now electric.

From the TfL website - "London-licensed taxis are exempt from ULEZ charges. Older, more polluting taxis are subject to a 12 year age limit, with newer, cleaner taxis extended to 15 years."

Not sure how many London cabbies are driving around in 13 year old vehicles. I suppose you could argue that it places an unnecessarily high bar to entry to the profession in that it cuts out a potential source of cheaper second hand vehicles for people starting out in the taxi game.

Suppose it depends on whether you care more about better health outcomes for all or the rights of individuals to use more polluting vehicles for their businesses. With any business a change in regulation/law is a threat the leaders of that business should understand is a possibility.

I doubt there was that much thought involved. I suspect he's been caught by a camera and fined. Then when making the explosive device thought he'd better go heavy rather than light on the explosives if he's going to all the trouble.

I think this might be one of those stories that gets used to push an "online misinformation" or "clamp down on internet freedom" agenda.

electrification of vehicles and improved particulate filtering must be a massive part of this. Though ULEZ would have accelerated the process, no doubt.

Perhaps he did and perhaps you're right, but that sounds very suss to me. I suspect his collection of Verdi operas, Strauss and Rimsky-Korsakov classical music collections will be evidence of early 20th Century authoritarian power adulation.

They're not rabbit holes, more like echo chambers with algorithms just piling on more and more of the same type of content (propaganda if you like), and further fueling the extremist views.

Even in that sense, it's only much older diesel vehicles. I drive a 13-year-old petrol car, which is ULEZ exempt. As are a lot of even 7- or 8-year-old diesels (I was recently looking around at the 2nd hand market).

Yes - but the more extreme your views, the more extreme content you are fed and the less the opinions held are challenged.

The ability for some to think critically about what they are viewing is very low - and therefore they can pose a more significsant threat.
