Anyone else listen to it ? One of the episodes that was more interesting from the point of view of the subject's responses to questions than from the music played I found.

I didn't listen, but reading the above has really got my goat. She was lucky enough to have been born in the UK to a wealthy family and so when life in Nigeria became too difficult so was able to move back to the UK, yet her policies would deny others the same opportunity e.g. those not born in the UK but wanting to flea a military coup

Obviously this is just a snippet so I'm happy to be enlightened if she came across as more compassionate

Did Lauren Laverne ask whether she was born a c**t, or just became one when she got into politics?

The wife and I tend to catch the start of Desert Island Discs on the drive to church on a Sunday morning, finding the quality/interest of the guests to be rather hit and miss.

As the 10am news concluded on Sunday morning I turned to the wife and said "ooh, Desert Island Discs. I do hope there's someone interesting and thought-provoking on this morning..."

We changed station about ten seconds later, after we'd heard the intro and stopped laughing.

Salman Rushdie a few weeks ago, on the other hand, was excellent.

I can't say she came across as compassionate but she's not a complete idiot either (note that I have not ruled out the possibility of being a partial idiot...)

Without having listened to it, everything in the write up seems quite reasonable, which I hate about politicians, especially conservatives. They come across as well adjusted and compassionate, but their actual policies and views are anything but. The cognitive disconnect between her saying she's in politics to "give a future to young people" and her actual policies is insanity.

I agree that it's absurd she doesn't recognise her privilege and luck in having British citizenship, and how she seeks to prevent people whom are in the exact same situation as her just without this "get out of jail free card".

That the only traditional "culture" she can give an example of being queuing shows her small mindset.

Guess I'm in a one-man club here of quite liking Kemi, unless someone wants to admit to joining me?

Haven't listened to the DIDs but I'm always wary when it's a current high profile politician doing these sorts of things, there's a high likelihood the picks and answers are carefully choreographed to sell personality rather than a genuine look at their taste.

I like her a bit more after listening but we were starting from a very low base, there is no way I could ever vote Conservative and that hasn't changed. Perhaps that is the usefulness of 'Desert Island Discs' and Nick Robinson's 'Political Thinking' in that they humanise the people behind the policies and give us some hope of constructive political discourse. Her comments about identity politics are worth taking on board.l

Interesting questions to throw at me. Can I ask what's made you ask those questions?

I'm in favour of more legal routes to asylum, but not necessarily open borders

How about you?

This is one of my pet hates. People should not have their political views defined by their ethnicity. It's problematic imo. Using a person's ethnicity to define their political views relies on stereotypes and takes away a person's individual agency.

There is vast political diversity within any given ethnic group and we shouldn't be culturally or ethnically stereotyping. People are individuals who are free to be good or bad.

Not sure that's what I've done here. Her ethnicity shouldn't dictate her views but her views could show some compassion for people less fortunate than her

Indeed, you didn't mention her colour or any tribal affiliations (one of the things she mentions in the programme is her Dad's preference for speaking English at home and that leads into thoughts on identity politics and how they don't just apply to black and white divisions, she gives Northern Ireland as an example.) It was a more challenging than usual 'Desert Island Discs' in terms of picking apart discontinuities, conflicting stances and acknowledging how her experiences had put her in the position that she is in. On the other hand there were no emotional outpourings of personal trauma but she must have experienced some, very much a fully armoured and ready for battle politician.

Not her ethnicity though is it, it's her individual circumstances relating to her ethnicity (being born here and having citizenship due to unlikely circumstances, escaping war but then denying that opportunity to others).

Why should should it? She may well be a heartless uncaring person. That is her right, and her ethnicity should have no bearing on that. As I said, by bringing in her ethnicity it erases her individual agency.

Interesting take.

I think I've just said she was lucky to have a route into the UK that others in her situation wouldn't have. I personally feel that being able to recognise that privilege would be a good trait to have

But Plimmers ? Plimpters ?, Ned didn't mention ethnicity, his comments could just as easily have applied to a white family from Nigeria. Maybe you need to listen to the programme and read the thread more closely...

By the way, I don't think she is a heartless and uncaring person but there is a hard as nails edge to her personality in my opinion.
