The football pitch, the most important investment for any football club. 13:58 - Feb 3 with 904 viewsBeachBlue

I am so annoyed right now, the Portsmouth match is cancelled again! Blackburn and Portsmouth both previously established Premier League teams, neither can get their pitch match ready. All of us in the championship are only one golden season from being promoted to the Premier League with their rigorous checks and standards! Bearing in mind the lengths that we (and indeed more so Luton!) had to go through to get to Premier League standard stadiums, surely there's got to be regulations put in place to prevent this? League one or league two is understandable but with millions being spent on players don't tell me the money isn't there!
Grrrr!!!

We only spent a lot of money on our pitch in 2023. If our ownership hadn't changed it wouldn't have happened. Unfortunately not every club has the good fortune to come into megadollars that we had.

Never forget that for ITFC the game changed in April 2021.

Aren't they owned by an investment group headed by the former Disney CEO?

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Apparently! Feel bad for anyone that had taken leave and spent money (twice!). I do wonder if they went over cautious to not risk a late inspection after last time.

I don't want to ever have two games in hand could be 10 points behind or something if that ends up being the case.

You do realise your pitch was the same standard if not worse up until 3 years ago when you upgraded it for prem standards?
Fratton is a semi synthetic pitch that generally holds up really well. Very Rarely lose any games on it. It is also scheduled for a revamp including new drainage and under soil heating at the end of this season or next.

You're right. Our pitch was at a League 1 standard.

But we did not constantly get games postponed on it.

Exactly, but I couldn't help wanting to point out to the mysterious poster that Pompey must be a League 1 club if our pitch was as good then as there's is now.

Please list how many games we had postponed. Will wait.

Why wasn't a cover put on it given the forecast? Really quite pathetic for a professional club.

Portsmouth were last in the Premier League 16 Years ago, Blackburn 14 Years ago!
Both since that time have suffered financially due to poor ownership decisions. We were very much in the same boat under Marcus Evans. I don’t feel it’s anything to really get annoyed about, instead appreciate the ownership and rise of our club. Not every club is in such a privileged position as us.

If a pitch is 2 ft under water then fair enough. If it has snowed for hours and it's too close to be able to clear the pitch fair enough. If it is so foggy that the referee can't see both goals from the halfway line or an official cannot see across the pitch to determine an offside then fair enough. If a major incident occurs then fair enough.
But it is obvious that some clubs are not taking adequate advice and making adequate provision to see that a game is on therefore they should be fined and forfeit the points.
The authorities should have a requirement of the standard of facilities in each league and if that club cannot come up to those standards then they drop to a league where their facilities are as required for that League.
Would Town have been able to operate without spending millions on VAR, facilities for media etc.
For anyone disagreeing go back to the seventies where Portman Road was a shadow of the stadium it is now and yes I know Marcus Evans was responsible for it running down. But again the authorities should make sure that an owner or owners are made to keep a ground up to certain standards.

Clubs prioritise players and you can understand why. There should be some better minimum standards though. It’s surprising if pitches don’t have drainage for example (drainage that works that is, not the Blackburn version!).
