Waterlogged Portman Road? 22:26 - Feb 3 with 1016 viewswoodbridge_blue

Been trying to think when, if ever, Town have had a home game postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Can't think of one. Have I missed something obvious?

Been a few frozen pitches and the 1972 floodlight failure but can't recall any water based cancellations.

There was a match postponed for this very reason in around 87.

I recall as I was lucky enough to have a box at that time and everyone went back to the centre spot bar where the club put on a stand up comedian to entertain everyone while we had a beer

Oxford at home. I got to the car park at Portman Road just as it was called off.

Oxford at home in the late 80s.

And Milts’ testimonial in the late 90s probably wouldn’t have made it to the end had it been a proper league game.

I remember walking down Portman Road to see a suspicious amount of people walking towards me, away from the ground.

Didn't recall it being for waterlogged pitch though.

There was a Youth Cup match at Portman Road abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch in 2009 in the 88th minute which really should have been postponed.

FA Youth Cup Tie Abandoned Two Minutes From End 9th Feb 2009 21:46
Town's FA Youth Cup fifth round tie against Watford was abandoned at 0-0 with just two minutes left on the clock due to an increasingly waterlogged pitch. Referee Matthew McLaughlin held two pitch inspections before the game but despite torrential rain was happy for the game to start. 0

Definitely Oxford at home in the late 80s. Travelled up from Sussex on the train aged about 16. Heavy rain all morning. Bought my ticket for the game about 12ish. Walked up the stairs to the upper tier of the Pioneer Stand as the gate was left open and the pitch was already looking waterlogged.

Went into town, got a bite and then rang my dad from a phone box so he could check teletext to see if the match was still on. Had that horrible wait as the pages loaded but game still on. Chatted with my dad for a couple of minutes and then just as I was about to ring off, the teletext page flicked over and the game was off.

Trudged back to the station just as the Oxford fans got off their train. The only consolation was tickets to the Leeds game a week or so later had just gone on sale so I could buy one.

Funny how I can vividly remember that day but if you asked me what I did yesterday, I’d have to stop and think.

I have a rather fuzzy memory of a friendly being called off minutes before it was due to start at Portman Road one night. I went with my Father to see it way back when. So foggy you could hardly see the goal nearest to you, even if standing at the bottom of the stand. I have a vague recollection it was against ( or should have been against ) a Danish side called Vieje Boldclub, but I could be mistaken, so long ago!
