"Palestine Action activists cleared of aggravated burglary at Israeli defence firm site

None of the six activists were convicted of any offence over break-in at Elbit Systems factory near Bristol in 2024"

A couple of observations.

1. No wonder they want to get rid of jury trials.

2. Defend Our Juries said the verdicts were “a huge blow to government ministers” who had “tried to portray Palestine Action as a violent group to justify banning it under badly drafted terrorism legislation”. Amnesty International also said it showed how disproportionate the proscription decision was.

Alright Jon (got a new motor?),

Do us a favour and post links to all of the ‘usual posters defending this attack’

Thanks in advance.

BDS stating that JC’s celebratory post is spot on.

It’s ludicrous people are celebrating their actions in this instance.

That’ll be a ‘no’, from Jon then.

That’s a surprise.

So do you think they should have been punished for their crimes, or should it be legal to cause criminal damage and break a police officer back?

Should it be legal to cause criminal damage and break a police officers back.

Of course not man, wtf is wrong with you?

I’ve not read anything on the trial or their alleged crimes other than what has appeared on these pages, so I’m completely unqualified to comment on punishments.

Please try and avoid viewing this as celebratory in any way.

I hope people will realise from my posting history that the last thing I am is an antisemite.

Indeed, nothing in my OP or subsequent comments waw intended to touch on the cause in question or its impact, and I certainly did not celebrate the decision. I have therefore been surprised at the turn this thread has taken.

My concerns were matters of principle, regardless of the circumstances, namely.-

1. The abolition of jury trials.

2. Using Terrorism Act in a way it has never been used before to target direct-action groups, with the corresponding arrest of hundreds of people merely for holding up a placard.

But if people are happy with this, so be it.

There’s no surprise at all to the way the thread has been taken. Entirely predictable, sadly.

I don't think anyone has suggested you are, and would even have had it is a consideration so I wouldn't worry in that regard.

I think the thread would always go that way, because it is a quite shocking case, and generally this country isn't like the US where Jury selection and the massive divide in their country has always been a big part of things.

I just wouldn't really, probably naively, expected it here in such an open and naked political way:

"During the trial one juror asked the judge whether it would count as a lawful excuse if a defendant believed they were performing a life-saving action by destroying weapons used to kill civilians in an illegal genocide. Johnson said it would not, but Menon reminded the jurors of their absolute right to acquit."

If a juror has this view and asks this question, then they shouldn't be on a jury for me for a case like this

Shocking isn't it? People seem to be emboldened to attack jews in the name of "Free Palestine". Which was the point Stephen Pollard was making in the column I linked.

I don't think it's purely a UK thing, but cases like this and the banning of Maccabi fans is a slippery slope where mob/vigilante rule is allowed

I already have done above.

JC is claiming victory for this group going unpunished for causing criminal damage and the attack on the officer. If you’re saying it’s a victory, to me that’s saying you agree with their actions. BDS has clearly stated what JC posted was spot on.

Funny you should mention the Maccabi Villa game. Still waiting for a response from someone on that thread.

Just how utterly thick do you need to be to do this? Far too many have failed to condemn things like this.

Many people who think they are morally superior seem to have their morals on a bit of elastic.

Unfortunately not all racists are thick - many partake in their hatred, be it physical, verbal or online abuse knowing full well that such attacks do not achieve anything, but they don’t care. Because their hatred warps their mind into believing that they are doing something good - which they aren’t.

Hatred blinds.

But this thread has got onto antisemitism (including the implied suggestion that the jury was antismetic) when that issue couldn't have been further from my mind when I posted what I did.

I suppose it just shows the difficulties/interpretations that can arise by posting anything about Israel, Gaza, Palestine or Palestine Action, so in future I am just going to stay off these topics on TWTD: I'm not on social media elsewhere anyway.

Have another read through. Hopefully you’ll see there’s a lot of surprise at the outcome, and that nobody is celebrating the injury to the officer in the police who sustained the horrible injury.

I’ll leave it there anyhows, given theres that crew that are following this conversation around to jump on a button when either of us posts.

Apologies, I thought I’d seen your name as one of the poster who upvoted. My mistake.

Point stands though. Very easily seen as being celebrated by those who agree with Corbyn’s post.

Agreed on your last sentence.
