| Ipswich 11:53 - Feb 6 with 997 views | flykickingbybgunn | Ipswich is rated as the 3rd best town to live in behind Cheltenham and Blackpool. It rattles on about some delightful streets and parks and "two of Englands greatest boozers" The Arcade and the Spread Eagle. (Other pubs are available) | | | | |

The reality is most people live in the areas outside of that... and we are genuinely lucky with the countryside, seaside, nice little towns and villages we are in close proximity too. Even in town there are nice independant restuarants, cafes and shops to be had. The waterfront on a nice day could be almost anywhere in the word. I do feel quite lucky to live here.

When you consider the cost of living there compared to many other areas it stacks up OK. Property prices are ludicrous, but relatively speaking I'd imagine Ipswich is much cheaper than Cheltenham, and even nearby Colchester. 59 minutes to London on the rattler, close to nice coast and countryside, decent amenities in the Town, statistically relatively safe, a nice community vibe in the residential areas, good parks, quite a bit of history and interesting architecture. Like a lot of Towns the high street is dying on its arse, but there's plenty of worse places.

Pretty much agree with all that. I no longer live there as moved to the Suffolk countryside five years ago for a quieter life but the docks area is really nice and always head there for a few beers on match days. You forgot to mention that Ipswich is the finest football club in the land so what’s not to like 😁
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

I’ve lived in a few towns and cities and Ipswich gets a very bad press - it actually compares quite favourably to many perceived ‘nicer’ places. I do think that the town should try to get more confident and aggressive in trying to rejuvenate itself. Not sure how though.

TBF I think that's what they are trying with the City of Culture bid, the new museum on the waterfront, the investment in The Baths as a new arts hub. But regeneration takes time and the rot had really set in. Having lived in quite a few places, and now in Ipswich again, I think in many cases the people who really talk it down haven't had any significant experience elsewhere, or they can't get their head round the changing face of the high street. If Oxford street is full of vape and american candy shops, it's not a massive surprise Ipswich is too. Homelessness is certainly an issue, but Hyde Park Corner has become a tent village over the last 8 years or so, so again the odd rough sleeper in door ways here isnt exactly a shock (albeit it still sad) I'm always much more shocked by people who bang on about how nice Ravenswood is compared to the Town centre, when much of that area is an entirely anonymous industrial estate with hideous traffic. The docks is a million times better than it was growing up in the late 80s, the town square would be better if they can fill the old debenhams with something. The loss of nightclubs is the only really demonstrable collapse that I can see compared to when I was growing up here.
| Ipswich on 15:50 - Feb 6 with 491 views | DJR | The thing I like about Ipswich is that most of its medieval layout has survived, as you can see from this 1780 map: the Greyfriars and Civic Drive developments being to the west of the old town. https://ipswich-lettering.co.u For reference, St Matthew's church, adjoining Civic Drive is in the top left of the map. And if you walk along any of these streets today, you can often see plenty of medieval buildings. [Post edited 6 Feb 15:54]

Not perfect but better than many similar sized towns and cities. Never really understood the negativity from some. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The comment came from the Telegraph and included all the towns in the country with 100,000 or more population. The layout of the streets is not Medieval but Vicking. I read somewhere that the layout is the most original Vicking "wick" in the country.
