When did they disappear? I thought I’d get a couple to give the kids a massive carbs and sugar boost after competing, but nobody seems to sell them any more. You used to be able to get fruit ones, golden syrup, even chocolate I think. Food of the gods with custard after a day on the hills, or playing a footie match, etc.

Like suet or Christmas puddings, you had to boil them for about an hour or so, after having put a hole in the tin. But when microwaves came on the scene, you could take the pudding out of the tin and cook them in something like a minute.

I don't think they put microwave instructions on the tin straight away, but I am sure they did later.

Anyway the difference in cooking time always struck me as somewhat bizarre but I did like them and used to have a whole can to myself.

And whilst on the subject of things that are no more, I used to love stewed apple in a tin. These days I think it only comes in the sort of deserts for children that come in squidgy packaging and they suck to eat.

Possibly still get them in B&M or worth a look anyway… I saw they’d got the Fray Bentos tinned meat pies the other day.

Maybe people didn't take them out of the tin and instead put the tin it the microwave- probably that's why they stopped making them?
Or rather they moved a lot of sponges etc to plastic containers which you could put in the microwave

My mate at college used to get a stack of Fray Bentos pies from his mum every couple of weeks. TWTD, but thankfully never again.

I’ll have a look in B&M. The extra steaming time is worth it, as the microwave plastic pot ones are tiny.

Or a lot of people ended up in hospital with bad burns after reading the instructions that said ‘remove label and stand in boiling water’?

Sainsburys still have them in little plastic pots, still as good, but much smaller, unfortunately.

Aunties is the brand our local COOP do in a pack of two and they’re minuscule. As DJR said, the tinned ones were ideal for one. You’d need about 6 of the modern ones to get close.

Bah humbug. I bet Wagon Wheels have shrunk as well.

On reflection they were still around long after 1987. I’m sure I was having them in the early 2000s. So I’m only 25 years behind the times, but I’m still struggling to come to terms with it lol

U can still buy small steak and kidney puddings in a foil bottom place in boiling water not bad for what they are.

Used to work in the CWS factory in Lowie in the 80s and I can tell you the mixed fruit sponge puddings when they came out of the steam ovens ( retorts) where the food of the gods ... they were OK reheated but absolutely not a patch on when they were first processed..... they got us through night shifts!
