| Southampton make 10 changes 15:00 - Feb 14 with 1879 views | Dennyx4 | Southampton have made 10 changes for their game against Leicester this afternoon in the FA cup. If Leicester win, we will have to rearrange our game against them, as we are due to play Leicester at the same time as FA Cup 5th round date. Portsmouth are scheduled to play Blackburn that week, so can’t even rearrange that game for the Saturday. May mean we have a blank Saturday coming up? | | | | |

| Southampton make 10 changes on 15:10 - Feb 14 with 1451 views | LegendofthePhoenix | Has the FA Cup ever been as devalued as it now is? I used to love Saturdays when the FA Cup was on. the 3rd and 4th round were kept free for the FA Cup. Semi finals were on neutral grounds, so the final at Wembley was really special. It started with Man Utd not playing in the FA Cup so they could play in the world club cup. Now even 2nd tier teams are changing almost their whole team. It's no longer on terrestrial TV, bar the very odd game. 4th round doesn't have a dedicated day, so league matches have to be rearranged. What used to be the best club cup competition in the world, it's become a hindrance. Sad times, I hate what football has become. | |

It is very sad. Tradition and history sacrificed so the TV whores can make even more money.

Especially as that, since the formation of the Premier League, it's become the property of the big PL clubs as their squad players are better than everyone else's. in the past 32 years, 27 of the winners have been one of the really big boys.

If Leicester win we will still have 16 instead of at least 17 matches remaining this season. If Southampton progress there is the prospect of the Good Friday match being rearranged.

If Birmingham beat Leeds (and Leicester beat Saints) then we could possibly ask to move forward the Charlton away match from 22nd April? We would both have a blank week on 7th March. Towen vs Leicester Charlton vs Brum

Its been devalued for years. Not helped by the fact its invariably won by a top 6 PL team. I thought CP winning it last season would add some value/excitement back. But I was surprised by how many people I've spoken with who said they never bothered to watch it. I appreciate the old replay model was seen as a bit of a killer, but I think that model helped the romance. But its just not just sky. Too many fans, simply bemoan owners who don't spend on new players., 'we need an owner who will buy new players now' is all you hear. You'll never hear 'we need an owner who will put all their money into the youth team with the aim of having a top team in 8-15 years'. Yes sky put in alot of money, but its that money which allows the clubs to buy those players fans demand. Football/sky is only reacting to what the consumer wants. If sky put all that league money into the FA Cup instead of the league, clubs would take it seriously

Not so. We have at least 1 fewer game to play. Impossible to assess the benefit of that exactly. If we lose at Wrexham again, expect a torrent of derision.

Outside of being a lower league side that wants a run for the cash or a big tie, the best time to have a right go at the cup is if you’re safe from relegation in the PL but have no chance of finishing in the top 6-8 either. Even championship clubs that have a chance of relegation or the playoffs can’t really handle a run, which is most of the league. This was the worst year for us to entertain any kind of run. Even not having a championship game this weekend was very unhelpful for us in the context. [Post edited 14 Feb 15:45]

Spot on. I don't feel like going to any more cup matches. I don't watch football on TV any more besides Ipswich and Ipswich's rivals in the Championship. I don't even feel like watching the World Cup other than England matches. I used to love those competitions. Football is being ruined by money.

Even then, each Premier League place in the table is worth about £3m, which is £1m more than the prize for winning the FA Cup.

Yeah but if you’re an established mid table PL team that’s nothing either way.

And by the massive over-exposure on TV. When I was a kid, there was MotD, the Big Match or MotW on Sunday as highlights programmes. The odd European highlights on Sportsnight. The only live game was the FA Cup Final, which was what made it so special. Now, you can watch your top PL team live on TV almost every time they play. Endless international matches, plus more trumped-up finals tournaments & an expanded World Cup. Yuk!

I agree, there is just too much football and nothing is special any more. I used to keep the Saturday free for the FA Cup final and enjoy all the build up on TV, whereas this season I won't even watch it. In 1994 there were 24 teams in the World Cup. This year there are 48. in 1994 there were 61 matches in the Champions' League competition. This season there are 81 matches in the 'league phase' alone!

Didn’t the euros used to have 8 nations compete back in the day? Expansion isn’t all bad but it’s just got to a level of greed now which has kind of diluted everything.

I’ve just looked it up. Anything to get away from the Scottish wife who is suddenly in a great mood. We lost a two legged quarter final (they’d call it a playoff today) to west Germany after winning our group featuring Switzerland Greece and Malta.
