Another reason to hate social media: 'school wars' 17:27 - Feb 26 with 1457 viewsgiant_stow

My kids school has been assigned a side in the Waltham forest version of this sh1t. Tomorrow is the rhe chosen day - i doubt anything will actually happen, but its kind of freaky, even knowing its most likely just poisonous guff. Who's behind this i wonder?

There’s absolutely no way that those social media sites are doing all that they can to combat hatred, misinformation and suchlike.

I know that there’s been talk about banning under-16s from social media but in my opinion, fining them heavily is the only way to get them to do something meaningful.

I’ve said it before, but I’d shut them all down. When they can demonstrate they have robust codes of conduct that are acted upon, then maybe open up access again. They’re causing so much damage across all aspects of society. Who gives a crap if we have to wait 15 mins to get team news from the official site rather than a fascist hell hole.

Little update: Boy home safely - apparently, the only sight of trouble was a potential crush of concerned parents waiting outside the school gates.

This brings to mind something that happened at Northgate when I was in the fifth form back in the 70s

A few friends and I had as usual sneaked out of school to the local chip shop for lunch when a gang of 50-100 students from Copleston approached us. They had things like bicycle chains and the like but in those days not knives.

They jostled us a bit but we turned the other cheek given were outnumbered, so they carried on to Northgate. I think the reason for what happened was something to do with a dispute about a girl.

We followed them at a distance and by the time we got there the group were outside, the school gates were locked and our sixth formers were threatening to take on the kids from Copleston, and being held back by the teachers.

Because the gates were locked it all petered out eventually but we were left with the dilemma of how to get back into school without getting punished for going out of the school at lunch without permission.

In the end, I suppose it was a bit of handbags at dawn, and probably not as serious as what might go on these days.

I can only agree as one myself once.

There is certainly for many (me included) a tendency towards aggressive behaviour. But I found playing rugby was a good way of getting rid of much of that aggression in a controlled and fulfilling way.

Sadly for society, some carry this forward to adulthood.

Do you remember Mr Powell a PE teacher at Copleston, whom I got to know when he coached the Suffolk U16 rugby team?

He had a very strong personality, and in the case of the incident I mentioned, he turned up at Northgate to order all the Copleston kids to go back to school. From recollection, they quickly did as they were told.

I also lived in east Ipswich and would have gone to Britannia Road primary school were it not full because of all the houses built on Broke Hall estate. Instead kids on the estate like me were bussed to Clifford Road primary school much closer into town. But sadly our buses weren't yellow.

I also went to the 9th Ipswich sea scouts situated on the lane between Foxhall Road and Copleston from the age of 8 to 18.

EDIT: I came across this on Wolfe Powell, and with that name, no wonder he was known as Wolfie.

TBF I remember this happening at my school in the late 80s. It was organised with a “rival” school from the next town along and kicked off for about 30 seconds at the park before a single police officer told everyone to burger off home which they did. So it’s not a new phenomenon.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
