Some will have today down as routine victory. It used to be anything but routine. The standard of football we've had under KM is incredible. For my money, there's a serious argument that this season is his most impressive so far. Dealing with relegation, especially as a club years ahead of where it should have been, the fallout of losing lots of games in the second half of the season, a lot of turnover, some unexpected, new players arriving late, huge expectation and pressure, a lot of players who needed support for different reasons... None of it easy. Just look at Leicester and Saints. And yet he's done it again and built another team in his style. Some of the patterns and play today were so reminiscent of the 22/33, 23/24 sides. Disappointing to see so many leaving early rather than stay to clap them off. On we go.

| We are in Dreamland on 19:05 - Feb 28 by JakeITFC | I’ve long had the opinion that I wanted us to get promoted just so we had the money to be a top Championship side. Competing at the top of this level is much more exciting and fun than being battered week in week out at Prem level or the previous life we had as effectively no-hopers at this level. That does seem to bring an unbelievable amount of expectation and some people see results like today as expected and routine (and are therefore sometimes raging when it doesn’t happen) but I think it’s great that we are a good team with good players that are playing positive stuff. |
I think it’s the amount of money that we’ve spent that drives the feeling of expectation tbh

Not to mention two promoted teams are very much challenging the notion of the Premier League being a closed shop. If you want to avoid a long term existence in the EFL, without moving forward, building new stands etc you need multiple promotions and to try and establish. [Post edited 28 Feb 19:18]

I still want us to go up, absolutely, but the watching us go up bit is the best bit!

If we don’t go up this season or next we would have missed a very big opportunity to take this club forward IMO. Next few months are absolutely crucial really to have the PL money pumped back into the club 2 years out of 3. Things could look very different in a couple of seasons in terms of where we are at this level otherwise. Especially if we don’t make a lot of profit on players we have purchased at high price tags. McKenna has been massively backed contractually and in the market and he won’t he obviously wouldn’t be here to start, say a Championship season in August 2027. No doubt there would be plenty of other notable departures on contracts from 2024 windows etc. I don’t think we should underestimate the ambition of this ownership group and surely can’t be content with being with just a challenging championship side. Big plans ahead! [Post edited 28 Feb 20:35]

Yeah agree about the journey sometimes! We would be at a much better place to have a go next time around though.

The balance of the side today looked as good as it has been as a collective all season, just last week I was asking for the trio of Burns, Nunez, Mehmeti with Davis flying back down the left - we saw that in flow today, and as you rightly say, it showed shades of our previous successes. I thought the balance with the personnel across the pitch was perfect - for the first time this season, I could see a side that reflected what KMc wants to build in a side, that looked like a KMc side, that looked like an Ipswich side we’ve become accustomed to. I think there is still work to do with the build, but that felt like a significant day towards Town 2.0.

Look how many managers struggle at relegation. Look at Leicester. Southampton have taken longer to get their stuff together. Look at George Burley when we went down. Look at Luton (and Edwards was a good manager clearly). Leeds really struggled and on and on. Getting us up will be a hell of an achievement. We have a very good squad now but it really did take time. And it's still not completely ticking perfectly but progression each month pretty much.
