| THIRTY years ago today 13:49 - Mar 18 with 3222 views | baxterbasics | This was unleashed upon the world. I was at HMV upon opening to purchase before heading to school. I had already recorded it to tape after hearing it's debut on Radio 1, looped it and listened to it maybe 100 times, shared it with friends. Some of whom I'm sure went on to buy the whole album as a result - so hopefully I can be forgiven the small act of piracy. "Mindless, banal, and utterly fantastic" - NME | |

| THIRTY years ago today on 20:24 - Mar 18 by baxterbasics | I was also at Reading 98. The twist in the story is, as of a couple of years ago, without any announcement or explanation or heads-up for the fans, they have been self-censoring the offending lyric in SMBU. Ad Rock got his wish eventually. |
Weird cultural artefact: I remember when SMBU came out, Channel Four had a special programme at about 11pm where they aired the full video for the first time, then there was live reaction from (inter alia) Will Self. It was wild.

| THIRTY years ago today on 14:29 - Mar 18 by Guthrum | In the ancient world, horns were a sign of holiness, same as a halo nowadays. Hence depictions of Alexander the Great with horns. Moses was often shown with horns in the Middle Ages. |
The whole "Moses with horns" thing has a very problematic history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ https://www.biblicalarchaeolog [Post edited 19 Mar 9:27]

There was a similar broadcast on (I think) The Late Review on BBC2, in which the panel discussed the video. Jeremy Beadle was one of them. His take was along then lines of "we can tut and disapprove all we like, but my kid loves 'em, and these guys have effectively invented their own genre of music"

Found him rather annoying when he was alive, but I quite enjoyed Beadle's grave in Highgate Cemetery - it says "Ask my friends"

| THIRTY years ago today on 15:11 - Mar 18 by baxterbasics | (Checks booking..) Saturday for me. So 50/50 see you there. Will be my 16th time since 1996 - fourth time post-Keith. Doing MK Bowl in the summer too. |
First time on Friday for me, absolutely won't be the last, was absolutely phenomenal! Though I didn't start there, I ended up in the insanity against the barriers at the front. Whole experience hit so much harder that anything else I've been to. Maxim looking me dead in the eyes, pointing and shouting "to all my warriors at the front!" was a moment I'll remember!

Yup, they always deliver. I was just slightly off the barrier but central, still recovering now, legs and feet a mess. I'm starting to feel my age now, and did think for the first time, maybe next time I'll get a seat.

I wasn't at Reading 98, but I did see them at Reading, I think it was in 2008? One of the only times I genuinely feared for my life at a gig, was right in amongst it and people were so tightly packed you were swaying but your feet staying still on the spot they were rooted as nowhere else to go, felt like I was going to go over a number of times. Despite fear of fatality, great show. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Crowds have gotten tamer in recent years too. Partly better crowd management, partly the number of people who prefer just to stand there with their phone out (booo). Also I think The set itself now has longer breaks / fill sections between tracks to allow some calm time - given Maxim is nearly 60 he probably needs this the same as the crowd do! I remember at both Phoenix 96 and V97, being on the barrier, and almost getting the life crushed out of me. Surges forwards, back, left and right, and you'd be packed so tight you could lift both feet off the ground and stay in place. Being only a scrawny teenager I came away with bruising across my hip bones. Security were regularly having to pull people out who were just not coping. At V97 I recall they actually stopped playing for a minute to give the press a moment to settle down and we could catch our breath. Hence what I said above: I came away Sat night thinking maybe next time I'll just get a seat. Or at least just stand further back. Feeling my age. [Post edited 27 Apr 11:52]

I've been to two gigs post covid, both at the 02 and seated, so I'm well out of the loop, despite it having been my whole life in a previous iteration of myself. I do enjoy watching people who camp outside of venues when they've been told not to, throw absolute wobblers though when they realise it guarentees them nothing, as when the doors open, everyone just runs to the barrier ha ha

Brings to mind the old joke: Jeremy Beadle has got a very small penis... but on the other hand...

V97 was something else for the prodigy, limbs. SMBU in particular was feral
