Iconic numbers at football clubs. 19:54 - Mar 24 with 711 viewsBeachBlue

When I think of iconic football shirts and numbers, a few come to mind.
Man United 7
Newcastle 9
Arsenal 14
West Ham 6

So why isn't the number 6 shirt more iconic at Ipswich?

Kevin Beattie / Terry Butcher etc.

Probably because there are other worthy contenders for most numbers at Town. We had a very successful team of stars when the numbers were 1-11. On top of that, more recent stars have worn notable shirts with different numbers for various reasons.

Fair point, I make no secret that my all-time favourite player is Terry Butcher. So there's the number 6, Kevin Beattie was my dad's favourite, so again number 6.
It's all good though.

Clive Woods 11, Brian Talbot 4 , Beattie 6 for sure, Burley 2, all numbers i still associate with particular players...

But a odd one for me was Mariner 11 in the 1982 England kit!

It seems just as strange that Glenn Hoddle had the number 9 shirt.

Also Brooking was number 3 and Coppell number 5.

My serious answer is because the club haven't had a player with the required level of national/international notoriety.

the same way say... Middlesborough don't have one.
