Woke originated as African-American slang. If someone asked you if you were woke, they were asking you if you were aware of (awoken to) the realities of the struggle that African-Americans were going through during the civil rights movement, almost as a shorthand for asking if you supported the civil rights movement.
And of course, as we are wont to do, white Americans adopted it and conservatives then perverted its meaning into an attack - as if somehow being aware of the struggles of black people in America and supporting their rights was a bad thing.
In its worst use, it's used as code for, well, there will be a missing prefix here, but it's a WORD THEY SO DESPERATELY WANT TO USE IN EVERYDAY VERNACULAR AGAIN - lover. It goes that low.
