| The terms: Leftie, Woke, Snowflake on 11:13 - Apr 1 with 1574 views | SWLondonBlue93 | "Politically correct" has gone out of fashion, so "woke" has replaced it. Once it loses its impact they'll replace it with another buzzword. | | | |
| The terms: Leftie, Woke, Snowflake on 11:25 - Apr 1 with 1508 views | J2BLUE | The trouble with woke is that it has different meanings to different people. For those being called woke they think it means someone who is tolerant so understandably say what's the issue? For me, it's a term for someone who goes out of their way to be offended by any little thing. Someone who who will argue with you that words are offensive even when they are clearly defined such as overweight or obese. The new one seems to be not wanting to say killed or murdered. Instead going with unalived. I thought this was just something to get around Youtube's restrictions but it seems to be catching on. Someone who is so obsessed with looking for tiny issues that it becomes their entire identity. | |

| The terms: Leftie, Woke, Snowflake on 11:33 - Apr 1 with 1468 views | SuffolkPunchFC | I could be accused of being 'woke', referring to the term's original meaning before it was hijacked to be associated with moral superiority. I'm also right of centre with my political views, so 'woke lefty' makes little sense. Woke has (original definition) a lot of overlap with compassion, so I cannot see how people can see that as an insult, but there you go. That's the modern playbook, much of it coming out of a the extremes of an ultra-divided, almost rabid, USA . This is a good (original) definition of woke. " The word, which had its origins in African American society and groups, referred to be [sic] aware of (awake to) racial and social injustices, opposing oppression, and seeking an emphasis on how past events impacted some of these injustices, and attempting to address, proactively, creating a fairer, more empathetic society!" | | | | Login to get fewer ads

In my view, it is used in this country mainly in its pejorative sense and has tended to end up being used to describe anything or any person the person using it doesn't like. "...it is used in this country mainly in its pejorative sense..." I'd say that's true is most countries now, including the US.

In my view, and I come from the left, debating ideas not trading insults is the only way to act. In footballing terms, it's a case of playing the ball not the man. Sadly in this day and age that is not how many appear to behave at least when it comes to social media. EDIT: This extends beyond politics. I always try to be polite in all my dealings with people in person, and am no different on the only social media I use, TWTD. [Post edited 1 Apr 12:21]

There was a lovely moment a couple of years when an author who had written a book on the perils of woke was then completely unable to define the term during a live TV interview. https://www.independent.co.uk/ Emblematic of its current usage as a vehicle for 'thing I don't agree with with'.

a uk court has now accepted the following definition: "the dominant philosophical belief in academia which holds white people to be morally accountable for all group disparities favouring whites."

A county court. There's quite a significant amount of context missing from lowie's post, somewhat surprisingly: https://www.doyleclayton.co.uk

Unalived is used almost exclusively online to get around social media algorithms which demonetise or remove entirely videos referencing death. You’ll often see text format stories which are reposted as images on social media sites with these kinds of terms (death, suicide, drugs etc.) censored out, often crudely. It’s called “algospeak” according to google. So, one less thing to get upset about. Edit: sorry, just read the whole post properly. Are people really saying this out in the real world? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the definition there isn't really about what 'woke' is, but about what 'anti-woke' thinking defines 'woke' to be.

What if PC stood for politeness and consideration?
